Because that seems to be the tipping point at current pricing where the premium for hybrid technology seems to be offset by the increased operating cost of the non-hybrid car. But then again, at $5/gallon gas, some bright engineer-type will invent something that gets even better combustion efficiency (something analogous to direct injection, maybe). So, it really is a cycle of sorts. Somehow, I think the hybrid vs. non-hybrid debate is going to continue until there is a technological leapfrog event (like maybe fuel cells (or possibly, anti-gravity packs...)).
