and smaller cars. As many have said, the Prius price premium is probably larger than the cost of the gas saved. (And I'm pro hybrid, but one can't argue the fact that bying the new hybrid technology as sold is really more of a statement about investin in the future, as opposed to real benefits now)

But we aren't doing them right. But you can't really buy one that is made with the ultimate in efficiency.

Because that seems to be the tipping point at current pricing where the premium for hybrid technology seems to be offset by the increased operating cost of the non-hybrid car. But then again, at $5/gallon gas, some bright engineer-type will invent something that gets even better combustion efficiency (something analogous to direct injection, maybe). So, it really is a cycle of sorts. Somehow, I think the hybrid vs. non-hybrid debate is going to continue until there is a technological leapfrog event (like maybe fuel cells (or possibly, anti-gravity packs...)).
