Most states use this as the line that you can not tint your windshield below. Some states laws say AS-1 or XX inches where there is no line. In FL it is just the line so if you don't have one your in luck!

It seems to depend on where you live in CA. Before I got my MINI, I started paying attention to the cars I saw in San Diego. LOTS of them have tint on the front windows. I got tint put on Malibu Stacy the day after I picked her up (in IN). Since ignorance is bliss, I don't know what the % is. You CAN see thru it, but I'm quite sure it isn't even close to legal. I am prepared to lower my windows immediately if stopped by CHP etc., but whenever I've been next to, in front of, or behind law enforcement at stop lights, they haven't had any interest whatsoever in ticketing me. It probably helps that I DO have a front license plate, ALWAYS wear my seat belt, and am a courteous driver, so I don't give them an obvious reason to pick on me to start with.

Or maybe Malibu Stacy and I are just too cute to mess with.

That may be the key. The CHP have been paying a lot more attention to darkly tinted cars, since of of their own was shot and killed during a Hwy-99 traffic stop earlier this year.

 

So the MINI comes with some tinting?

 

Yes, like most new cars these days, a certain level of smoked glass is used.

How is your windshield 5%? It's illegal to tint your windshield AT ALL, let alone 5%!

Edit* Now looking at your pics....your AS-1 line is tinted 5%...it was misleading when you said your windshield (as in a whole) was tinted 5%.
