R50/53 It's official: Smart cars coming to the US next year
I would love a smart car. You would think that SUV's with their massive gigantic size would be more careful with denting other cars and being more careful in parking spots but it is quite the contrary.
I believe MINI and Smart car owners are more aware of their size and often times more courteous when openning doors and parking...
Door dings are the thing that really infuriate me... whether be negligence or done out of spite...

Not all that sure the cars are that wonderful. According to all the press I've read on these cars over the years, MB pretty much lost their shirt on these cars they were so unpopular in Europe. Wonder why they think Americans will buy them?

Granted, if they knew the track there's no way I would have come close to keeping up with them (2 to 3 times the hp with only 50% more weight is decisive), but the Smart Roadster is a brilliant car; stellar handling with plenty of get up and go from just 82hp. The much-maligned, 6 speed sequential gearbox isn't perfect for sure, but wasn't nearly the catastrophy some people claim.
The (first gen) Smart 4/2 is similarly well designed, if not as sporty looking or handling. They've sold almost a million of these around the world since their introduction (one of the slowest years was 2006, with only 112,100 sold).
I have my $99 deposit ready to go on one as soon as they are accepting (email from smartusa says "soon")
cheers
Kurt
