R50/53 "My MINI Has Never Left Me Stranded"
Until we can get Greatbear to chime in here, i'm not really sure why there are two in the first place. The answer is yes to both questions, there should be a specific code for the MAP sensor(s), and it should affect all four cylinders.
So, assuming that only two of the four cylinders are having a problem, what sensors / mechanical parts are dedicated to individual cylinders or a pair of cylinders on the tritec motor?
Does anyone have a schematic(s) of the fuel management system, both electrical and mechanical?

Post 66 killed my plugs???? I knew it was up to no good... just like it's brother 67...
admittedly, I'm in a catch-22 on this -- Leif is quite competant and has changed plug wires before, so I can't imagine him not thoroughly connecting them. If weirdo mechanic guy checked them, I can't imagine him not saying; "you know, you're plugs are fried"...
In either case, I care not: my car runs!

Why thank you, KT... it's an exciting day
Much of it (perhaps all) owed to Partsman, without whom my car would still be languishing in a questionable garage
I believe I will construct a small man, made of parts, and declare him the patron saint of my car.

And... I spoke too soon: My car is dead again.
I'm going to go out onto a ledge and say that we can safely rule out spark plugs as a primary issue.
Ollie gave Leif about a good mile and a half yesterday. Today, we made it another mile before he conked out. From the start (today) he did exactly what he was doing, briefly, at the dragon -- sputtering upon acceleration. It's almost a hiccup -- he looses power (we'll say 25%) then catches up and returns to normal, then looses power, then catches up... finally, the ASC light came on again and my car turned back into a very expensive lawnmower.

I was talking to my coworker, who is also an artist specializing in found object sculpture. She said she'd make him for me if I got her the parts
This thread (as well as related OmPosts in other threads) has been very educational for me. I have learned several important technical terms, such as "total power suckage," "mysterious death-like behavior," and "re-double-check the plug wires."
^^ It's all about talking the talk, Chris... In order to blend in with the gearheads, you must speak their highly technical jargon. Then you just bleeeeeeeeeeeeend right in... a total sleeper... just... hangin' with the wrenchers... and no one's the wiser.

I started reading this thread, hoping that I could follow the entire story arc from beginning to conclusion! It's like buying an entire season of "24" on DVD, watching the first 23 episodes and then finding out that there is an error on the disc for track 24!
Arrrgh!
PS: Good luck!

The Official Wrap-Up
I got my car back last night -- YAY!
As it turns out, the codes involved were P0300 (random/multiple misfires), P2304 and P2300 (weren't on the OBDII list, but on Dodge/Ford websites they are ignition coil primary circuit high and low, respectively).
There was a chafe in the engine wiring harness which had affected 1/2 side of the ignition coil. When they replaced it, #1 cylinder misfired and, upon recheck, they found a faulty #1 injector. Replaced that.
Since he was there, I had them do service 2 (I'm at 59K, and the serpentine belt replacement was a large portion of the cost of that service, so I figured they may as well do the rest of it).
Now my car-car runs fantastically
His rough idle is even gone, which is a nice perk.
And, of course, I LOVE the Jetta... but I felt like I had just purchased a new MINI as I drove him off into what would have been a sunset had it not been overcast. The smile is back. Hooray!
Thanks to everyone who gave ideas and moral support!

...So, as you feared way back in the first post, did you hemorrage money?
This could not have been a cheap visit!
It must have felt like your were buying Ollie all over again!
Glad to hear it sounds like they got to the root of the issue. It is often a worse situation when they fix something and it doesn't turn out to be the root issue so you end up going back a few times. Talk about frustrating!

Oh boy did I hemorrhage... bled money all over the place: they're STILL cleaning it up, I'm sure. But the weight savings from my previously heavy wallet has yielded at least 5HP.
Total damage was (ooooh... it still hurts) $1239.25
I personally find the $.25 insulting...
