This is not an endorsement in any way - I hope I am not violating any rules here...

I know a lot of us here are interested in alternative to the OEM roof rack so:

I just found another option for a roof rack for the MINI. I have a 1999 VW Passat and a Saris roof rack system for it -so out of curiosity I called them to see if they were thinking about a fit for the MINI. They have one! I don't have my MINI yet (I'm a member of the CWFMC ).

Has anyone this this fit yet? I have the system on my Passat and am pretty happy with it. Come May, I might buy the fit and give it a try - I won't have much to loose since I already have the rest of the system (the fit kits are pretty cheap). In the mean time if some daring soul wants to try a different option... Their web site is http://www.sarisproducts.com. As I said above - my MINI won't be here until May, so I cannot try it 'til then

I'm going to a bike shop on Saturday to check out that Saris rack. Will post pics if I get it.
By the way, you're not violating any rules, you're bringing a product to our attention. If you look around the site, you'll see numerous threads devoted to people trying to find a good bike/luggage/ski rack for their MINI

The correct site is http://www.sarisracks.com btw

I was thinking of a rack to carry extra tires to racing events... camping gear ect but the MINI rack involved putting holes in my roof...  and I just do not want to do that ... so does the Saris rack mount without permanent alterations to the car????

As far as I know it is like any other "normal" roof rack (like Thule or yakima) - nothing permanent. I have yet to see it on a MINI, but I have it on my Passat and like it a lot.
