I like to think that, "If you have to ask if it's a bad idea, it probably is"

Keep in mind that it is not the weight of the couch you need to wory about ....It is the force of wind and acceleration on the couch that will want to pull the rack out and off the roof. a roof rack will not support it.

Get a truck

First, as somebody with a roof rack, it's definately NOT rated for 200lbs. It's actually much closer to about half that. Heck, the racks on my Pacifica and the Subaru we had before that are both rated at only 125...

While a love seat probably weighs in the area of 50 to 75lbs the size and shape of it is going to cause a lot of drag and impart forces on the roof and roof rack that they're not designed to withstand. There is definately the potential of you causing damage to both the roof rack bars and the roof itself due to the amount of strain that you will impart on them.

While you can load up the MINI roof box pretty well, it's important to note that unlike your love seat, the MINI roof box doesn't have the aerodynamic qualities of a brick.

Once you get past the potential for damage to the MINI, there's also the potential for damage to the love seat. Between just what it will take to manhandle the thing onto the roof of the MINI and then secure it to the roof could cause tears, snags or other damage to love seat itself. Then once you start driving the pontential for the fabric to start to tear from the force of the wind is also pretty high...

In the end it's still your car, your love seat, you insurance, and your risk... But I wouldn't do it...

Dumb idea..

DON'T DO IT!

But if you do, put it on the roof legs up so if the wind flips the car upside down, at least the MINI will be sitting in a nice comfy loveseat.

O'no your all wrong. It sounds like a fine idea. Just make certain that you take a picture for all of us. I will send it out to everyone I know on April 1st.

I'm thinking of putting a tarp around the couch, sticking it on top of the roof rack and using tie downs(the motorcycle ones that ratchet down). Gotta take it maybe 50 miles or so. How bad of an idea is this? Anyone ever use the roof rack for anything like this?
Lessee- U started this thread almost a month ago. If U don't have that damned couch moved by now Goodwill will come and take it off your hands. Or just put it on casters and tow it behimd you
