I think Bullfrog nailed it. People hear have a hard time giving up position on the road. How many time have you tried to merge onto a highway only to find some twit coming up on the open spot at 80 or 90 then slamming on the brakes 2 inches from the person in front of them. Just so they're not behind you. I think most traffic congestion is caused by people not volume.

Both of you hit it on the head, I agree

I pass through a roundabout everyday on the way to work. Traffic flows a lot better than the stop sign there once was. But there are still idiots. Most people treat it as a curve. It's not a sharp enough curve so people fly into it taking up both lanes and looking at you because you are on their road.

Other than that. Mondays you can always see remnants of drunks or the normal idiot driver that was apparently suprised by the roundabout. Within a year, I have seen the city replacing the yeild sign multiple times. The pavement and concrete? It has more skid marks than a dragstrip. It wouldn't be complete without the oil lines on the road after they slam into the center median and bust their oil pans and keep going down the road.

I would rather have a roundabout than a stop sign. Up the road we have a 4 way stop sign that has been there for at least 20 years that I know of. There is a wreck there almost everyday and about 2 fatalities a year. I say we need to put up solid steel rail-road crossing arms and write on them "these are here because of stupid people". Or, at the least, put several speed bumps up to 150' away from the intersection......and still the sign.

We lived in Swindon for four years, never did get used to the Magic!

Since we were there so long we were required to get a UK drivers liscense. Thankfully the road test did not go via Magic.

You've obviously done your homework regarding traffic circles but to complete your knowledge base, you simply must come up and drive the circles in the Boston area.

They'll be more than happy to show you how easy it is to 'run' a traffic circle.

The only problem with Boston turnabouts is that neither those in or those coming in yield. It's every man for himself or herself. And I seem to remember that some of them were multi-laned. Some of the ones in the towns in Delaware and PA aren't circles, but town squares. Someone already discussed these. They are usually 25MPH.

Will those who have no problem running red lights be capable of yeilding, or using their turn signal when turning left thru the roundabout?
I appreciate the links regarding roundabouts. I'll try to keep an open mind (as long as it doesn't fall out).

You're half right. The problem is that those coming in don't yield. Those already in the circle shouldn't have to. It's the law.

Brandnew roundabout!

ADOT just finished the pavement part of the new roundabout on AZ89. This was my first time though.:impatient
The Seina minivan was in a big hurry miles back, passing on the right. I put the camera down, took the inside lane, flicked right then left without lifting, and zipped right by her. Oops, the sign is 25mph!

forgot to add picture earlier.

Ok.. I had my first REAL close call at Suicide Circle this morning Who'd think after 1300 miles traveling to and from the Dragon that I'd almost wreck the MINI while traveling through the same traffic circle I've used for over 8 years...

Some idiot ComEd employee didn't stop at the stop sign and didn't yield to me. He pulled out in front of me at the VERY last second. I did EVERYTHING possible to not t-bone him. If I had been in my old Saturn, I'd probably be looking for a new car right now.

The MINI handled like a pro A hard left followed by a hard right and I made it through... I called ComEd to complain and they said I needed a LIC# or car# to file a complaint. I said.. "maybe next time, I'll just plow into him to get the info" . It's called Suicide Circle for a reason. I'd rather face the Dragon again.

So far so good with our new roundabout, but I understand long semis take up both lanes.

Yea yea. So it's "normal" to think about turning a roundabout into a skidpad? I'm really tempted to try ours in the wee hours!
