Also, it seems that more than half of all vehicles don't have turn signals anymore......either that or the drivers don't have enough hands to talk on the phone, read the paper, drink coffee and eat a breakfast burrito, and still give a signal. Or maybe it's a "What business of yours is it if I'm going to turn?" attitude.

Takes a lot of fun out of driving.

cop rear ending you,,sounds like a lost krispy kreme

I know when i drive and i can't see over the car in front of me i look through the rear window of the car in front of me and try to see whats going on through their windshield . if your too close and preoccupied ala, a cell phone, make up, a krispy kreme you may miss seeing the stops lights come on, so ivve learn that if some one is tailigating me i slow down to the speed limit and give my self enough room to coast to a stop if something happens in front of me - which also gives them room to pass if they desire
at red lights - until the car behind me stops i leave 2 car lenghts in front of me just incase they putz under judged their stopping distance... i can always inch up.. i keep a eye on them till they stop.
Hell its my car and my neck if i get hit - so best to pay attention for idiots out there and way too many out there now. :impatient

I'm coming to the conclusion that people do like to tail gate MINI's. Maybe it's their size. They see a small car & assume it's farther away than it really is. Just kidding, I think it's poor driving & people trying to push their weight around. You now the type of Vehicle I mean. While I don't much like it in the MINI I still feel safe. My Miata is another mater. I try to leave some space in front to scoot up if it looks like I'm going to get tapped. A hard hit is another thing, no defense really. Be safe out there!

Yeah .. That's why I got an 'Actual Size' sticker from Aesthetic Creations and applied it to the bottom right of the back window!

nope, believe it's more likely a matter of inattentive idiot drivers - the roads are packed full of them. i've been hit once from behind in the mini, it had nothing to do with the car, in this case, the driver simply said she wasn't paying attention.. however, risk of getting broadsided may be greater in the mini as drivers of large trucks or suvs often may not see or make the effort to check blindspots -- this is where your attentiveness and quick use of the horn will come in handy.

Curious what you drove before the MINI. Given that it's a hatch so your rear window is the back of the car. And that there's no overhang whatsoever it's easy to think that someone's right on your bumper in a MINI.

I always watch the first car coming up behind me at a light and leave a little wiggle room. I built this habit in the Miata. On two occasions I was able to snake onto the shoulder as a car--brakes locked--squealed into my previous location. Both idiots were on the phone.

I've been driving a Subaru Forester since 1999 & it's back window is the back of the car also. I'm no newcomer to the hatchback, the MINI is just one of the many I've owned & loved. Too me it seems the larger the road barge the more they crowd you at a stop.

I am on my 3rd rear bumper because of idiot drivers, also replaced my front end as a dodge 1500 thought I was a speed bump and ran over my front left side and had to back off of my MINI.

I have been rear ended twice, one an inattentative driver, the other just a bad driver. I only had body damage from the bad driver though.........so I was lucky there

Something DreadPirateDad taught me early on... growing up in SoCal with many "under insured" drivers. If you get hit by someone, see if you can get their keys (often left in the ignition). Do it nonchalantly. Then toss them as far as you can. The other car just ain't moving till the Black & Whites show up. Protect and Serve, brother.

I have never seen any MINI accidents except on in San Diego where a Hummer crossed the media and hit a MINI head on.

Please don't try this in Florida. Reaching into or entering ones car "Unlawfully and Forcefully" while that person is still in the car can be stopped by Deadly Force.

I was just going to say, no way I would attempt this in this state unless the person who hit me was a 98 lb, 75 year old grandmother..... and even then, I would worry that she may be packin.

You can see the Phillips head screw marks on my rear bumper. But that is about it.

But anyway, I walk back to get this idiot's insurance info and she has the ***** to say, and I quote, "Oh, you can go to Home Depot and get some paint to fix that." I am still laughing at that one. She apparently "fell asleep." It was 8:30 AM...

But anyway after a bit of "mild" arguing about the damage she said she didn't have insurance. At which point I asked her quite seriously, "Are you being serious right now?" That got a dumbfounded, open-mouthed, gaze back at me so I walked away, wrote down her plate number and called the cops.

A lawyer friend of mine is going to run her plates and give her a little, friendly call to gently persuade her to pay for the damage or I file an official report.

But anyway, I don't think the Mini is a rear-end magnet. I think everyone on the road is a rear-end magnet now. People just suck at driving.
Having grown up on Long Island, I feel I have the luxury of being able to say I've grown up amongst some of the WORST drivers in the universe. . . Every time I go home, I am blown away by how inconsiderate 90% of the drivers are down there - like rats in a shoebox...it still blows me away.

This has happened to me a few times lately. One big old clunker Taurus was coming out of a Wal Mart lot onto the two lane road I was on (in the left lane) and switched to my lane without looking. I was in the spot and laid on my horn, hard. The cigartette smoking, flicking ashes out the window, beater driver didn't even acknowledge I was there!

I've never had a big problem with cars drifting into my lane until the MINI. That and people who pull out in front of me. I do feel invisible sometimes, but I don't know if it is because of my car, or the fact people are only interested in what is going on inside their own little bubble and don't pay attention.

Luckily I haven't had any dings yet, but on my bumper I do have a scratch and can see a small round mark (like a bolt mark), but I think that is from the rotten parkers at my university.

Well, this thread is sure killing my enthusiasm for a MINI or any small vehicle for that matter. One thing for sure, the inattentive driver problem won't get better, people will continue to blast their music, talk on the phone, eat food and own the road their on. I'm going to look into an M1A1, if nothing else, the canon on top can add some attention to the inattentive driver.

After someone cuts me off or pulls out in front of me the latter of which happens a lot lately especially on 2 lane roads. It seems they think you will change into the other lane or slow down when they pull out in front of you.
Anyway I get right next to them in thier blind spot and give them a loud long blast from these.

People just about **** themselves thinking a semi is about to ram them. I've seen cell phones dropped and coffee splashed.
Now if I could just get one of those high frequency directional ear drum splitters for those pesky tailgaters. The closer you get the louder the frequency

Yes, this is definitely what one needs with more installed in the back. I drive with one hand on the horn or at least positioned where it will make it honk in a split second. It works. I consider myself a very defensive driver and rely on the horn perhaps more then I should. I only use it when needed which means I don't honk when I see someone I know to let them know I am in a car driving down the road. I really think the horn sound should say something like "your a _ _ _ _ idiot you idiot!" with various degrees of emphasis using 4 letter words with ing endings.
