Painting roof checkerboard

I am thinking of painting on the roof checkerboard. Instead of using a decal. What do you think? Has anyone done it?

I've seen pictures of a MINI with zebra stripes that were painted on, but
have not seen any more of the car for about a year. With all the great
technology that's out there now regarding the designing and application
of graphics, why paint? Vinyl is cheaper, still looks like paint (if applied
properly) and you can replace/remove it if you change your mind. It
would also be much easier to repair if chipped by a flying rock.

Check with Sarcux - he custom painted his stripes all around. It took
him alot of time and patience - but it looks terrific.

I have a sticker chekered top and have thought about dooing the same thing once it starts to peel. I don;t really know how much it would cost but I have seen the number $1,000 tossed out a couple of times.
