bmw --- MINI
well, my understanding is the system used to identify parts is similar, and the brakes do in fact say bmw on them, and I think some of the same diagnostic equipment works on both bmw and mini but I may be wrong about that, other than that, all I can say is subjectively the car feels more like my now sold e30 bmws (1984 and 1991) than the newer bmw's i test drove prior to getting the COOP.
I guess my point is that the Mini stands tall on it's own as a BMW model......like the 3 series right up to the M3. I would rather have an M3 than a 7 series..... both are good cars in their own right...... The Mini is not a watered down BMW it's a fully developed product in its own right. .... not a BMW lite...... I also ask for a little indulgence I have been home for 4 days on muscle relaxers for my back
I know my MINI is a BMW, but it sure wasn't built with the same quality in mind as my e30. Rattles, buzzes, you name it, it's there.
And in some ways I wish the MINI weren't associated with BMW. Have any of you read the ignorance and jackassery in some of the Roundel letters? Many members don't look down upon the MINI, but some do, and it is for those members that I will rejoin the CCA and attend as many driver's schools as I can to **** them off
Sorry OT

BMWs and Minis are great driving cars but certainly do seem to have their share of quality/warranty issues.
I just realized the most obvious commonality between BMW's and MINI's: DSC
Oh yeah, that's the same across both brands. And that leads me to believe they also share the same legal and marketing departments.
Don't blame the engineers... blame the lawyers.

I'll let you all know soon. If/when my MINI ever gets here (unloaded in Charleston last Saturday), I can do a comparison test between it and my 2003 E46 M3. Seriously, I ordered the MINI with eyes wide open, I expect it to be lots of fun just like the M is, just in different ways.
all the fonts in mini's tachs and radio buttons are BMW fonts.
radio buttons and A/C controller buttons feel exactly like my 3 series.
('04-'05) Automatic shifter for mini looks like it came straight from E46.
last time i checked dension icelink cable on their website, MINI requires the same icelink that goes in BMW radio.
the orange LED interior lightings are the same as BMW.
i think there are a ton more to list about similarity/sharing from BMW to MINI.....
I look at my MINI as smallest BMW lineup.

While not always directly interchangeable, the MINI shares a lot indirectly with BMWs, especially the 3-series. The electrical system, rear suspension, DSC, climate control, Nav and stereo setups are almost direct carryovers aside from being altered to fit in mechanically or aesthetically with the MINI. The reason that BMW and just about every major auto manufacturer does this is cost. While the MINI is a unique platform in the BMW lineup, this does not stop them from being able to dip into various parts bins of other existing models to get stuff to work in the MINI. Also, since auto manufacturers will sub out to external suppliers, and these suppliers also work with other auto manufacturers, some parts might be shared across completely different brands. The MINI engine is a prime example of this. You can find the alternator from the MCS under the hood of many Toyotas. The maker of the MINI seats (Johnson Controls) make seats for lots of other brands. Gone are the days when a top-tier manufacturer (GM, Chrysler, Ford, Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, etc) would have parts almost exclusive to themselves. In quite a few cases these days, you can unbolt a part from one make and bolt it into another and there's no difference. Other than the part numbers, of course.
Can you please tell me the BMW model that shares the MINI filter? It's a long way to the MINI dealer but there is a BMW dealer fairly close....and the part number if known.
Many, many thanks

Some of it varies car to car, some are model endemic, and some seem to appear on all BMWs.

So to answer your question: I meant the e30 was better built, and gosh darnit, if the MINI (over the next 20 years) proves to be as bullet-proof, well then I win twice, don't I?

Okay, I dunno if an1 had mentioned this already but ... Right after I brought Koopee home, a friend of mine pointed this out to me when he was checking out the car. He said…
Friend: Look at the front grille. Do you see it?
Me: See what?
Friend: Can you see the BMW trademark?
Me: Where?
Friend: There, behind the grille … I think that’s the BMW kidney kinda grille shape!
Me: Ooooh, so they hide it in there eh

I went into village hall last week to get vehicle stickers for my cars. I filled out the appropriate form and on the form it asked for the make of the car. Of course I wrote MINI. I then had the form to the clerk who says "you need to put the MAKE of the car in here." I tell her that I did. She says "no you just wrote MINI - that is the model of the car, not the make". I replied MINI is the make of the car. She once again says "No, I mean like Ford, Chevy, or like that". I say it is not a Ford or a Chevy - but it is a MINI - that is the make - Cooper S is the model. then she says, 'oh it is one of those MINI cooper things?" I say yes. She then says so then MINI cooper is the model of the car. I say no. MINI is the make. She says no "MINI cooper is the model. Its not like you can buy a MINI that is not a Cooper." I try to explain the different kind s of coopers and then there are different models (sort of) in europe but this goes nowhere. She then said but who makes MINI? At this point I am thinking, oh no - now if I tell her that BMW makes MINI it will just confuse her even more and she will insist I put BMW on the form. So I didn't say it. This went on for a while and she eventually with a big sigh in giving up she left the form as I had it although she seemed to only allow it because I wouldn't change my answer and this was already more work than she wanted to do for the day.

The two biggest things that the current MINI shares with the E46 3 series:
> Wiring harness (IE - almost everything electrical)
> Rear suspension design
Over the years MINI has switches suppliers from old Rover companies to partners that supply BMWs. A few things of note fall into this category:
The Key
The Steering Wheel
Getrag manual transmission (Cooper)
