R50/53 Common question, but need new answers
Look up "Gay" in the dictionary. Gay meant "Happy" long before it was used to represent homosexuals.
Ever watch the Flintstones? OOPS My bad, before your time. The only thing you probably remember about them were the two live action movies.
"...when your'e with the Flintstones, Have a Yabba Dabba Doo time, A Dabba Doo time, you'll have a GAY 'ole time!"
GEEZ I am so glad I grew up and got away from High school!

"...I just want more ideas."
1. Don't worry 'bout it. You will soon find that you are stronger than the opinion of others.
2. When kids say things like that, just laugh. They are insecure and there's no need to prove it to them.
3. Ask the best looking girl in your school to the next dance. (This has nothing to do with the MINI, but it might be fun to take out the best looking girl in the school, so why not ask her?)

If you want something visual I really like the bumper sticker I've seen on some MINI's - "I drive a MINI, what are you compensating for?" Otherwise, there's no need for you to 'prove' anything. If this is really going to bother you, don't get a MINI or wait until you're out of HS b/c if you feel the need to 'prove' anything with your car, you will get into trouble and we don't want to see that happen
As for the interior space, my instructor at my HPDE last weekend was like 6'4" and in the classroom stuff he was talking about proper seating placement when driving on the track. He said that the rules never really applied to him b/c he could never sit close enough to the wheel in any of his cars b/c his legs are so long. At the end though he threw in that he could sit properly in the MINI and it was the only car he knew of that he could do that in

Hutto, I'm in Houston too albeit thankfully way past high school. I was at a local car event in August and there were a couple of high schoolers there with their MINI's who were uber-enthusiastic about them. I think of the MINI as being for those who march to a different drummer, but that can occur in any gender/age.
Hutto,
If some of the neanderthals at school think your car's too girly, get a set of these, install 'em and no more questioning your vehicle's masculinity.

Hey they even come in EB.
p.s. Don't lower your car when you have these, lest ya want roasted nutz.

1. It isn't "girly" unless i'm driving it. Maybe my Tinkerbell and Hello Kitty stickers and air fresheners give mini's a girly name
2. I'm 20. Not exactly in high school, thank god, but i know young people... and not one of them has said anything but super positive compliments. They love the style, the size, and i prove that the Cooper has pep and great handling
After one ride, they always come back for more.
3. The headroom is the first thing EVERYONE points out as soon as the get in my mini. "IT'S HUGE IN HERE!"
4. Completely agree with picking up chicks with the mini. I gladly take up any offer to ride in a guy's mini

As cliche as it sounds, I think those kids are just jealous. They either would like to have a MINI, or would like to have any new car, and they don't so they want to tear you down and a very easy way to tear down a teenage guy is to call him gay.
I think a lot of people say a car looks "gay" when they mean it looks feminine. I agree the New Beetle looks a little feminine, but I think the MINI is a rare car because it looks soooooo "cute" yet not feminine (in my opinion). It has enough testosterone to balance out the pure sugary cuteness. I've had some of the roughest "redneck" deer-huntin F150 driving guys stare into my car and ask me a million questions and smile the whole time. I think anybody who makes fun of your car or you for having one is just grasping at straws to tear you down. Ignore them. At the very least, remember there's by far more guys out there who love the MINI than who think it's "gay".

Who cares?
I don't care if someone thinks my (our) car(s) is(are) girly...but when someone close to me makes a comment, I throw them my keys and tell them to talk to me again after they've driven it. For people I'm not close to, I tell them to go to a dealership, take a test drive, then we'll talk.

"Girly" cars
As long as there have been cars, someone's ride has been called a 'girly' car. When I was in high school all the British two seaters were girly, my old Miata was called girly, basically any small four cylinder (usually foreign) car can qualify. Usually labelled by lumpy guys driving lumpy cars with lumpy V-8s that handle, well, lumpy. Amazingly enough, small econoboxes never get this nickname, only sportscars that put handling over horsepower.
This will date me but until my senior year of high school, I had only a motorcycle. I would occasionally trade off with a friend of mine that had a Ford Pinto. I thought that was the ultimate sporty car, it had a 3 speed manual on the floor!
Well, I'm 50. I bought my S convertible last Friday. My lady LOVES my car and is considering one for herself. She is getting antsy though from all the attention that I get from other women about how neat my car is!!!
Screw anyone that ******* about my ride!!! I traded an Audi TT roadster for mine and I'm not looking back!!

"People's perceptions are their reality"
I doubt that anything you do, including giving them a ride, will change their perceptions ... the young can be so cruel.
Personally, I wouldn't give a dam... what "they" say. When I was young I bought a Datsun 240Z back in the time when everyone bought "muscle cars". They thought I was crazy.
Tough cookies (can't be more graphic here). If they don't like it, then they don't "get it" and they wont get it. But YOU DO. In the end, that's all that matters ... that YOU get it.
In a few years, you can look back and laugh at them

My kids think it is a cool car. Whenever I pick them up from football practice, they want me to "peel out" or do something to attract attention...
They KNOW about the MINI, because they have experienced the handling and the performance. --- Only as passangers.
But in two more years I'll have to start hiding the keys!

wow...good point... i mean dont get me wrong Ive seen the countless threads and read a lot of them, but i guess i just needed to hear this from other people who feel the same way i do... I mean there are gonna be people from day 1 that think the car is girly or gay, but after get enough money to get the JCW kit along with, possible pully, upgrade new wheels and tires, exhaust , chip, and CAI some will think differently...but some people are very stubborn or ignorant or both and will keep their opinion
