Thanks for all your insite.

Yes, I have tested the '05 TSX, TL, MCS Coupe, and MCS Convertible.

I really liked driving the mini, the clutch is pretty forgiving and it corners like a go-kart...but I'm not sure how fun it would be sitting in traffic. I live 15 miles from work and it takes me an hour to get there.

This will be my 4th car.

We currently have:
- '04 325i Manual (wife)
- '04 911 (http://www.socalm3.com/40th/) - mine is the one with the black wheels
- '03 Odyssey

Here's my reason for the odd comparison in cars..I want a:

- fun car, that's

- easy to drive in heavy traffic (some times it takes me 2-3 hours to get home from my LA office) - here is where the porsche fails miserably. The 911 wants to move like a bat out of hell...she hates sitting in traffic.

- I get lost a lot :impatient so having a Navi is important. The acura's have awesome Nav's as standard equipment

- I never used to notice the price of gas, but lately I have. I can afford the gas, but it still hurts me to see how much I spend on it. One ("spirited") trip to LA and back on the weekend can run me almost a half tank of gas.

- There will be the odd time that I need to carry my little girl. It won't be often, but I couldn't live with myself if I got rear ended and she got hurt because I went with fun instead of safe.

- It also has to be reliable. I don't have time to bring a car into the dealership for frequent services. Having a dealership close to the office is a big plus. Unfortunately, the mini dealership is about 5-6 miles away.

- Value, value, value...I like getting my money's worth. I hate paying a premium for hype or exclusivity.

I thought about a base '06 325i. Manual is about $31k, auto is about $32.5. It's a lot of money for fake leather and no Nav.

Yes, the 325i has better weight distribution, but I doubt I would be taking it up to the canyons. The TSX and TL both have adequate weight distribution in my opinion.

Each car has it's own personality. If I get the TSX and TL, I would probably drive it like a family sedan. I like the fit and finish of the TL. The bells and whistles are great on acuras. If I had the MCS, I would probably drive it like a go-kart

So...having said this, what should I get???

another car choice?

scion xB -

cheap - 14k
reliable - toyota quality
fun - customization
roomy - real roomy

I don't think it has nav but with the savings you can buy a portable gps you could move to any of your current cars that do not have nav.

It's not fast but given your commute an appliance like a scion xB might be an alternative.

Well, with all your due respect, it seems to me you already have too many cars. Why not sell the 911 and the Minivan? (Big gas savings there). You seem to be a fairly wealthy individual, but even the rich these days are coming to terms with the grim financial realities everyone else is facing and are making cuts here and there.

If comfort is your top priority, then go for the TSX. You are buying a car to essentially sit in stop and go traffic and one that requires ultra comfortable seats and electronic gizmos to keep you entertained while in a traffic jam.

The MCS will be the same as the 911. The MCS wants to move and doesn't really enjoy to spend its time on brutal rush hour traffic. However you will spend much less gas in comparison to the 911 and even the TL. Have you considered the MCS automatic for instance?

If I were you, I would get rid of 2 cars and get a nicer, cheaper to run and more fun to drive car for the everyday. My picks will then be the MCS or the TSX.

The MINI is a German engineered car and therefore one of the safest in its class. With the MINI you can have the best of both worlds: Fun and Safety. No regrets there. There are legions of MINI owners here that carry their precious "cargo" in the back with no problems.

Have you seen the rear crash ratings of Hondas/Acuras?

www.iihs.org

Not pretty.

stop drinking the MINI/BMW kool-aid. Compare the TSX/TL against its class, http://www.iihs.org/ratings/summary.aspx?class=15 . The 05 3-series has a Poor as well, so much for German engineering.

Look at front/side crash ratings as well, http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ncap/, where the Mini scores 4 stars in every category. Compare that to the TSX or TL sedans. If you think you're safer in a Mini than a sedan

XX911XX,

If you're going to be in stop-and-go traffic, you may want to test-drive the MCSa (automatic); it has a sport mode as well as shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Your mileage in heavy traffic in the MCS 6-speed isn't going to be very good. Well, I probably get 24-26 mpg in mine under such conditions, but 30-35 mpg highway.

Based on the cars you have and the conditions in which you will be driving (commuting mostly), I'd get the TSX.

Nah,

The TL is a far better car and it's well worth the extra cash. I worked part-time for Acura last year while I was in highschool and I had lots of experience with both.

If it's a definite no for the MINI, I'd go for the TL.

Also, people generally have an extreme reaction (either positive or negative), but have you considered the Saab 9-3? I like mine better than both the TSX and TL. Plus it's one of the safest vehicles on the road. You can pick one up for about the same price as a TSX, and it looks a lot better. I'd much rather have a MINI convertible, but I've been pretty happy with my '05 Saab so far. No problems to speak of. I'd at least give it a look. Especially with the re-vamped engines for '06.

I agree.. to say the mini is German engineered doesn't mean its safer. While it has a good rating for a small car, there are others out there in its class that are rated better...

If your looking at the TL and TSX I would highly recommend looking at the G35 sedan. I test drove a G35 along side a TL, A4, and 330i and it was easily the best overall value. Quickest of the bunch and slight second only to the 330 in handling....well honestly probably equally as good but in a different way.

I'm having a hard time deciding between 2 cars.

Used 2005 MCS fully loaded. It's beautiful, but the seller wants $30k (+$1k for shipping). It has Perfect Power ECU, Mitek exhaust, springs, control arms. It has 210hp.

Or, I can spend $1,500 more and get a 2005 TL auto with Navi.

Or, I can save $4,000 and get a 2006 TSX auto with Navi.

The practical side says that I should go with the TL, but the other side says MCS.

Is the MCS safe to put a baby in the back seat? Side impact issues on the MCS? Reliability issues? Warranty with a modified car?

Help me decide...
30K? Too much money. Get a new 06 MCS with JCW package and a full warranty for less than 30K.

and the winner is...

XX911XX, given your current stable of cars I'd suggest you get the MCS, but not the used one. Order one with a JCW Works package, and if this is really a heavy traffic rider, get the automatic. If you're still worried about the baby, I'd put her in the front but get a forward facing car seat that is designed to be used in conjuction with airbags and I'd take comfort in the fact that your little girl will be cushioned by 6 airbags in the event of a bad crash.

I think you'll find a JCW works cooper to be much more refined than one modified by a non-factory tuner. Go to the dealership and test drive one. However if I were looking for a more luxury oriented ride that still can provide some hooligan thrills and I had your financial backing I think I'd go for the Infiniti M45. But that wasn't on your menu so the MCS auto is still my vote.

G35

Is it true they only get about 16mpgn in the city? It's a beautiful car for sure. I just don't think I could enjoy driving it when it eats so much gas.

It was an easy choice for me, I'm 6'4 and wasn't comfortable in the TL or TSX, hit my head. The Mini fits with headroom to spare, heck I can even ware a hat if I choose.

While C4 shows enthusiasm, its his right to express his opinion (albeit a bit one sided at times )

However, your quote above has GOT to be the QUOTE of the YEAR!

"I almost bought a 911, but then I saw the mini..."

Having owned a 911 and a MINI I got to say that is one hell of a quote

As they say: "Racing improves the breed"

I got to remember that one. Down at the next mini-meet I can hear it now: "Yep, was gonna get me a Red Carrera Turbo but WOW, once I drove a MINI, there was no way I was going back to those Porsches. Hell, in the Twisties, I pulled away from three of them and left them in the bushes. Thats when I knew I could get myself four of these MINIs for the price of one of them 911s. Don't know what I'm going to do with 4 MINIs but It sure beats driving those rear-engined beasties. Slap me on a pulley and I'll haul butt on a Porsche."

This is the part where your supposed to laugh

I guess if you were driving in Manhattan. I get about 22 mpg with about 60:40 (hwy:city) and about 27 or so all highway. Just a little shy of the mini, but not much considering it has 100 extra HP, over 100 ft. lbs of torque and weighs about 800 lbs more!!

Hey Mikey buddy, before you start spewing garbage re-read my post. "My two picks, either MCS or TSX".

I never suggested for him to replace all his cars with a MINI. I have a suggestion for you... STOP scrutinazing my posts and then twisting them to your liking or convenience or whatever.

If you have an ax to grind with me, send me a PM or we'll take it up with the site hosts. Your choice.

I think you need to lower your caffeine intake.

Before you buy an MCSA make sure they've worked out their little "problem".

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...5&page=1&pp=25

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...=mcsa+problems

http://www.gbmini.net/mtblog/archive...e_engine.shtml

FWIW: I love my MCS as a track car and for taking the wife on weekend trips up the coast w/out the kids. I will probably own it a long, long time - but only because I drive it about four times a month.

However, I would not trust it as a daily driver. If you want something to commute in, pick something else. I've yet to own a BMW that I would consider even halfway reliable.

Southern California demands a $3,000+ premium on all Cooper's. 29k for an 06 is much closer to 32k at most dealerships.

I believe the JCW Package is 6-Speed only. At least thats what it said on the Mini Corporate site. Perhaps that's only for the Factory installed kit?

Yes Mikey, C4 never suggested I replace ALLl of my cars...just 2 of them.
C4, it seems you leave yourself open for comments by what you post.

Your comments can rub people the wrong way. Don't hate what you don't have buddy. You start by saying that I have too many cars. What's it to you how many cars I have?

Do you want me to tell my wife that she has to take the bus because C4 says I have too many cars?

My parents are staying with us to help out with the baby. In return, I got them an '03 Odyssey. Should I tell them to take the bus because C4 says I have too many cars?

I'm looking for a daily commuter. Not a replacement. The 911 will only be replaced by another 911. If you own one, you will understand what I mean.

WFT??? :impatient

Okay, I've vented. Let's all be friends.

I'll be test driving an auto MC tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. Last I heard, the 06 TSX and TL arrives in late oct early Nov. The Civic hits the dealerships next thursday. There's a shipment of Mini's expected to arrive on the docs 9/14. Feels like christmas!!

If I get a Mini, I'm looking foward to attending one of your meets.

I hear Crevier is the most expensive (highest asking premium) mini dealership in socal. Longbeach Mini and South Bay Mini are selling their mini's at sticker (so I hear...correct me if I'm wrong).

Do you know when the '06's are expected to hit the dealerships?

I thought about getting a Liquid Yellow MCS, but Crevier told me that they are discontinuing that color for the MCS and are only offering it on the MC. Do you think it's because LY is a low selling color? If it is, I'll probably opt for the chilli red with the white or black roof.

I saw some '05 MCS's for $26k. That's not a bad price. Do you think I could pick up a non-optioned '06 MCS for $26k?

any autocross mini events in SoCal?
