R50/53 Car alarms revisited
I just wanted to thank everyone for their posts- particularly the link to the OEM manual- now I can print that out and bring it to my dealer who was trying to charge me $700 for something that costs $375 and intalls in 1.25 hours (with labor charged at $100/ hour at my dealership)! THANK YOU!
Needless to say, my dealer offended me with a price of $695 for the alarm !! My car arrived at the NYC port yesterday so expect to pick her up at the end of next week. In any case, I had mentioned wanting an alarm before so followed up yesterday and was shocked when he stated his asking. I told him it was way too high, that the car is now pre-wired and I've seen the install instructions....he said he may be able to work a little off, like maybe $50 but we'd discuss that later when the car arrives. I've been very pleased with the dealer to date but am now getting the sour taste as the "schister" finance guy is getting involved...and trying to bend me over. I also mentioned tint...he wants $375 for that. He's trying to squeeze me on financing as well.....what he doesn't know is that I have a blank check in hand from my credit union good for full price plus tags/taxes if needed at 5.9%. The crummy part of buying a car is starting to set in... I had hoped for a better feeling as some of the reviews stated they threw in mats and goodies at no charge but I'm not getting that feeling....If the taste continues, I'll scrap all accessories from him and walk with the car as ordered as use my CU....

pgrmstr,
I bought my alarm when I bought my car, but I bought it uninstalled for $375. When I had my car shipped to me from New York to California, it was in a box in the trunk.
This past Friday I installed the alarm. It only took me 30 minutes! A very interesting thing to mention though. When I pulled the cover off the ceiling to install the ultrasonic senor, there was already one there! I think my car was "accidently" equipped with one at the factory! So now I have a second one that I'll never use. I then took my car to my local MINI dealer and they activated it for $45. Not a bad deal!
I suggest buying the alarm from Classic Auto Campus, doing the install yourself and having it activated. The flashing red light on the end of the wiper stalk is reason alone to get the alarm! It works great!
Anyone else here have the ultrasonic sensor "accidently" installed on their MINI from the factory???

>>Just curious - how long did it take them? Or rather, how long did they make you wait?
I was there less than an hour. It was early in the morning too, so I can only assume there was a rush of cars.

>>Hi MiniDean
>>I too had the infrared sensor already installed prior to the installation of my alarm. I guess we have an extra in case it ever goes bad!!

jbs111,
That's very interesting. It isn't suppose to be equipped with it is it? At any rate, I guess we're lucky!

Bakersan,
the unit i have is not an ALARM (which people ignore) but a device that will call you if your car is moved 1/4 mile and tell you where it is, block( i.e. 1200 to 1299), street, (elm), town (anytown USA), zip code, speed and direction of travel!!! Also, you can look it up on the internet and see where it is and how fast it is going.
soon to be on the sponsor directory.
