I just picked up my 05 MC yesterday (May 2 build date) and the OBC displays current speed. In fact, that's what I usually have it set to. Pete

I enjoy the OBC, but I'm sort of a gadget person I guess. I usually monitor outside temp, current fuel consumption or range. I also reset avg fuel consumption and avg speed at each fill-up. Ironically, I rarely use the current speed even though it's available ('05 w/ central speedo).

The OBC's average fuel consumption is slightly optimistic vs. actuals calculated by hand, but it's consistent from tank to tank. So, I just use a 1 MPG fudge factor if I don't feel like doing the arithmetic myself.

It's worth $200 to me.

Then again, I like the central speedo too, so maybe I just can't find fault with my MINI. Not especially useful advice when you think about it that way.

Are you sure you are reseting the avg speed? Cause if you are I would really like to know how you are accomplishing it.

Average speed should reset the same way as fuel economy - while it's displayed, just hold down the button for a few seconds, and it will go to zero, or whatever speed you happen to be cruising at. If not, definitely have your dealer fix it!

I'll try that this evening. Thanks.

Mine is and was wayyyyyyy off.

My MPG and range numbers suck. I have over 5000 miles of logs showing that the thing is over 30% off! And the range for a full tank comes in at 430 miles when I really only get 300-320. But it's repeatable. I like the outside air temp monitor the best, and since the thing is repeatable, if not accurate, I can still use it to compare tank to tank.

You guys have to remember that the Range is REAL TIME. So as you drive harder your range will start dropping quickly as it re-adjusts to your fuel consumption. I've taken mine on my 04' down past 10 miles to go multiple times and never ran out of fuel. Like in the other thread about the range i've had it at 0 2-3 times and just missed running out of fuel. For me its been pretty accurate in providing realtime updates to my fuel range.

I love mine. I use it for relative MPG and temps primarily. I don't find the average speed to be usefull and haven't figured out how to get current speed except instantaneously, when I reset the average speed function--in fact, if anyone can tell me how to change the ave speed to current speed on an '03 (late '02 build), I'd appreciate it!

Truth is, I'd get it again for the gizmo appeal if nothing else!

NO SPEED DISPLAY on the '05s

That's one single function I use the most on my 04 MCS. Now with the arrival of the 05 MCSC at end of May, I guess I have to get use to looking at the gauge in the center console. Some of the other functions I found useful are the mpg, temp, and miles before empty.

Input from a guy who can't bear to pay extra for metallic paint...

To OBC or not to OBC, that is the question...

Some considerations:

1 - it's only 200 bucks, so why not? That being said, however...

2 - I hear that the fuel economy numbers are wacked. If you do get the OBC, I'd do some by-hand calculations at fuel stops, to get a handle on the degree to which the OBC numbers are "optimistic".

3 - You're in a cold weather climate like me, and I have greatly loved the inexpensive cold-weather package. Maybe spend OBC funds there, or,

4 - Get front and rear fog lamps with OBC funds.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of specs, the Xenon headlights are very popular but my "standard" lights work just fine! And, don't you dare pay extra for one of those (gorgeous but too expensive) wheel/tire options. Trust me you'll love the 16" runflats on V-Spokes on your new MCS !

This cracked me up. You know, of course, it won't do any good and there will be a lot of other people chiming in that their '05 w/OBC displays current speed.

Didn't do any good when Chrisnl tried to stop the Blown Engine thread from turning into another oil recommendation thread...

I have Navi and the OBC, the navi screen shows temp at the bottom. I usually have the OBC show current MPG which I notice when "cruising" on the freeways around 80mph is about 31mpg.

Is it worth the $200? IMO, no but it was on the Mini we bought that was at the dealer. We didn't want to wait the 3+ months to have one built. I think it would be worthwhile if it was more around $75.

What? This is not a thread about oil change recommendation. I must have posted on the wrong thread again.

I would definitely go with OBC again.

The MPG is terribly optimistic, and the Ranget screen is terrible inaccurate.

For example, I've seen the range read over 680 miles on my modded MCS!! That means I'd have to get 51+ MPG. I've also seen where it shows a higher number of miles left at a position well below a half tank of fuel, yet my miles travelled to get to well below half tank was well under what's being shown as on range!!

MINIUSA, I want my money back.
My range hit -- once... And it usually shows ~400-450 on a full tank, and I've found that to be very close. Also I like seeing the instant fuel economy show single digits!

Yes, sorry to have left that out. No nav or chrono package, central speedo and my OBC shows current speed as well as outside temp, mpg, miles remaining on current fuel level, average speed, and something I need my reading glasses to figure out. Pete

PS: the mpg function was dead on for my first (and so far only) tank of gas. I computed 33.41mpg in 270 miles of fairly aggressive driving. The OBC reported 33.4mpg.

Well then that's nothing unusual. Central speedos get the current speed diaply, as I posted.

Ahh, point clarified... now that I know the fact (central speedo being the key), I won't spread any more incorrect information on this topic!

Get a Chrono Pak, if you like 'em, and OBC is included. Surprised my MA with this cost-cutting manuever. He had to check it out himself. Amazing how much ***** I'd finesse on the configurator, just to trim the fat before my JCW install.

Cheers,
Matthew Z

Sometimes my fingers are faster than my brain, (or I had a brain phart) but I DON'T have the chrono package.

But the digital speed AND average speed is there. To answer the question about the OBC - I like it.

I just realized I never answered the original question.
I like it and if I were to re-order tomorrow, I would order it again.

It was the only option I was on the fence about. I pretty much went "oh, what the hell, it's only $200" and ordered it. I definitely give it a .
