It will be a cold day in hell before I program those things on. Here in Florida that is just advertising for a ticket. The state troopers just look for them during the daylight and key in on them. I've heard this from more than one trooper.

As for jerks reading while driving....a co-worker of mine was driving to St. Pete a few years back. She came up on a woman with a book PROPPED UP ON THE STEERING WHEEL!!!! She decided to get the heck away from her, picked up speed and moved on. About 30 miles down the road while slowing to a stop at a light in a small town....you guessed it...the woman with the book plowed into the back of her. It totalled her car. The reading woman tried to blame it on my friend driving too slowly!!!!

On the surface, it would seem to be a bit immature, Digging a bit deeper, its possible if the other person has an accident because you induced him/her into it, that would constitute contributary negligence. If they died, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes at all. Each state is different about this but it would probably NOT be a good idea to have someone have an accident.

Just a deeper thought. .....

I bought the MCS over the MC so I'd have enough power to make quick passes on the 2 lanes I commute on. It's hilly terrain with few passing zones on my 28 mile 1 way commute. When the passing opp comes up, you gotta have the power to make it around.

Georgia is the same way exept even more agressive since they see no point in being kind to the tourist trade.

My eyes are sensitive to glare, so DRL's are annoying to me. I have front and rear foglights, xenon headlights, and driving lights; but I only use them on an as needed basis. Why needlessly blind other drivers?

An MC can do that as well. Ya just gotta downshift.

I too love the boost of power our Minis afford us , very sweet. Idiots who think their big ole vehicles can keep up are just that...idiots. However!!! having ridden a Harley for a very long time I always err on the side of safety for everyone. It just isn't much fun being the brunt of a non observant motorists screw up. For me fun is on the long winding roads of the hill country in central TX and not so much on the boring highways....well, most of the time anyway.

As a motorcycle rider I find that adopting the Motorcycle Safety Foundation teaching of "invisibility" works well in the MINI also. Drive defensively and remember that every time you turn on the ignition key of your MINI you become invisible to any other driver.

Look ahead, way ahead! Try to anticipate what might happen ahead. Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times.

Defensive driving is not necessarily about going slow, but also about useing the power that one has wisely. Speeding up can get you out of as many situations as slowing down can, sometime more. The trick here is knowing when to use each.

All that said, it sure is fun to watch them panic in your rear view mirror.

I have to admit that I would find it hard to feel responsible for someone who saw me driving with my customary style, namely zipping through traffic, and for whatever reason suddenly felt that their ego or superiority was being challenged and suddenly moved to try to keep up with me to the point where they exceeded their driving skills and wrecked their car.

When I drive, I don't do so in order to keep up or race other people, but I DO drive my Mini like it deserves to be driven. So, if other people see me driving fast and suddenly somehow feel they're being challenged, that's fine. But if they screw up while trying to make their heavier and/or slower cars do something mine can do, hey man, tough luck, sucks to be you. Take some responsibility for your mess-up, because I'm sure not.

In some states, thats call "aggressive driving" and you will be targeted by the police in those states. If its overly zeolous, then its call reckless driving and in some states, thats called suspended license.

Just a thought

Oh, and the part about "driving it like it deserves to be driven. Take that out on track day, NOT on the public highways. The life you save, might be your own.

Hmm, that sounds too preachy. Just be careful of the innocent people around you who may drive slowly and could care less about your zippy MINI

Illinois has recently publicized a crackdown on aggressive drivers, the penalties if you're caught, apparently have real "teeth". I think it got over-shadowed by the also new "no cell phones while driving" thing...

If it's more than just a TV/radio scare campaign, then I applaud this, for my own sake as well as for my minivan's (which typically contains at least my spouse, spouse and kids, or all of us, and probably has to dodge wayyy more of these "speeding bullets" than me in the MINI).

Actually I used to have a modded SRT-4, so the Mini is considerably slower in that respect...however, even though my Mini is stock, it doesn't feel "slow" at all. Sure, it doesn't throw you back in the seat with such force like my SRT did, but it feels alot faster than it is. And it's SO much easier to drive fast than the Neon. The SRT is a bear to drive fast. The shifter sucks, the torque steer rips your arms off, and the clutch gets a little shakey after you run it hard. I miss it...but I like the Mini much better.

I travel on a highway that this time of year has lots of slow moving farm equipment. They are big, take up 1 1/2 of the 2 lanes, and you encounter them coming at you, or going in your direction.

Knowing when to go, or slow is important, I slow when in I'm not sure

Watch other drivers

This has been a great discussion!

Obviously watch the road, weather and construction changes things. But you have to watch other drivers! I make a game out of watching a driver's head quickly moving around, and predicting where they will go. They usually signal after changing lanes! Helps keep me sharp for identifying the plain wrapper cop cars! In AZ, the car following is responsible for not keeping their car under control.

Today, a young lady was killed about a half mile closer to Prescott from the wreck I posted just last week. It was not near an intersection, and it's another head-on. DON'T BE A LEFT LANE LEMMING! That's what my letter to the newspaper that was printed today says!

No, it isn't. I'm tired of being lied to. I'm tired of being told that going 65 on a four lane divided highway is dangerous. I'm tired of seeing people that should NEVER be allowed to have a drivers licence get other people hurt or killed but those of us that KNOW how to drive and have taken the time to learn get told that going ten miles over on a straight highway is a menace to society. I get exceeding tired of being told that tickets are supposed to be a deterent, when if you look it up the money goes to every pet project in the world INCLUDING law enforcement retirment funds. No vested interest there is there. Just tired of the lies.

Rant off.

This was a tough thread to read...

Not because I'm illiterate, but because I agree with 99% of everything said.

We want to enjoy our cars be it on road or on the track, but the beauty of the magical MINI just being able to leave other behind in the dust without really trying.

I'm guilty for leading others on and I am alive because the MINI pulled me out of the worst situations and speed was not involved.

Great cars MC and MCS. Drive safely and happy motoring.

Lolo

WOW, 10mph over the speed limit and you're getting ticketed, YOU ARE UNLUCKY. I am usually good for up to 15 over without tickets out on the hiway, but I make sure I am not the fastest one out there in the pack, they usually target them.

I also distinctly BRAKE and give a wave when I see the cops, they'll usually let me go, not always, but a lot of the time. Better luck to you out there. I just like looking at it as "tax" rather than punishment. But whatever "floats your boat", eh??
