MCS Backfire

Have 1300 miles on my 05 MCS and have noticed a put put backfire noise when letting up on gas. My dealer says this was designed on purpose to make the car sound like the old Minis. Can this be? Have seen a few posts here but nothing official. Is everyone else with an 05 S experiencing this?

Firstly a "backfire" and the exhaust gurgle that comes with the 05's are 2 different things.

I think you are referring to the gurgle, and yes it's standard.

Backfires sound like firecrackers. LOUD.

Backfire as in the sound of a cannon shot? Probably not. I'd assume you're referring to the popping sound that's there by design.

that's an '05 MCS. And it doesn't matter what exhaust system you have. You have 2 choices... deal with it or sell it. Most of us find it quite enjoyable.

t's a gurgle not a backfire and it is not very loud. I have seen many posts that make it like it's some herendous noise.Evidently the people that have never owned a sports car.Nothing personal

I have an '04 that "gurgles" when I let off at the right RPMs... I haven't listened closely to any '05s but I imagine it is about the same... I'm sure my neighbors don't like it too much, but I do.

Love the burble on my '05! I want it louder!

I'm sure this had been beaten to death...but where was the change made to make the exhaust do this? It doesn't appear to be in the muffler setup.

I'm planning on doing the "1-ball" set-up and I want to make sure I still have the burble once the other muffler is removed.

I haven't heard the 05s yet, but I picked up a "girgle" when I added the Scorpion Exhaust to my 04'. Heck, I like it. I'm suspecting with some of the comments I've read on other posts, that the 05s may be louder than what I'm experiencing.

I have an 03 with B&B Tri flow exhaust on it and it gave me the "gurgle". I love it, Think it makes the car sound good when you down shift and us the engine as a brake .

I have an '03 with the stock exhaust that I "one-balled." I recommend this to anyone if only for the 20+ lb. weight savings. Also, I got the deceleration "gurgle" after the modification was done. I love it!

The Jabberwock!

Another of Tillie's many nicknames is "The Jabberwock":
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

from "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll
I assume the "eyes of flame" are a reference to Tillie's Xenon headlamps. Could "whiffling" be that lovely supercharger whine?

As others have already said, true backfires are a whole different thing. I had an MGA Coupe with serious backfiring problems due to a burned exhaust valve. A true backfire is scary loud. One of the Beastie's backfires finally exploded the muffler - completely ripped it apart. It looked like an M80 had gone off inside it!

I haven't investigated it further, because I love the sound, but I was told by an MA that it can be programmed out of the car. Not that I imagine most would, but that's what I was told.

You and me both! I've just about got the burble to happen at every low rpm upshift. I also engine brake through my neighborhood in second gear for more "pop-pop"

Whenever my wife and I refer to using the Mini to go somewhere, the phrase "pop-pop" gets thrown in

My 03 exhaust burbles a little bit. Can an 05 exhaust be mounted on an 03 or do they use a different hanger arangment preventing me from getting an 05 on my 03?

I think they're "real close." I think I've heard that the two rearmost hangers need to be heated and twisted 180 degrees. I'm not certain about that, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that this is a fix for exhaust systems made to fit earlier cars. You might want to check some of the other exhaust threads...

Thanks for the info. I really, really, really like the stock exhaust for the MCS's. I like the 05 much better due to the louder burble and some have said that part of the power increase in the 05's is due to the newer freer flowing design. So I'm hoping some '05 MCS owner will upgrade their exhaust to an aftermarket and have no need for their stock one and I can ****** it up for a steal.

I think someone should name their car "Beans" based on all the farting it does
