I'm sure that this mirrors some of your own experiences, but I thought you'd like to have a look.
It's one of those reminders that the "bigger is better" mentality still predominates in the US. I have the feeling that it's much less of an issue even here in Canada; we like our small cars here.

It's funny. I live in suburban hell - Orange County, California and over 90% of the cars on the road are SUVs and Pickup trucks. And they are never hauling people or stuff – it is typically a latte sipping, cell phone talking, non-paying-attention suburbanite on her way to the mall.
I have never understood the appeal of driving a piece of agricultural machinery on the road but, as my grandfather used to say, “you wouldn’t be so smart if you didn’t live in a world of morons.”
