R50/53 Anyone backdate Facelift engine mount to prefacelift?
Anyone backdate Facelift engine mount to prefacelift?
On my 05 (7/21/04 build date) I recently installed a clone Vibratechnics mount to replace a failed hydro mount instead of a Corteco FL mount like I used on the 06 last year.
It now has far better motion control of the engine under accel and decel, but the side effect is I now drive something that buzzes and vibrates like a battery operated boyfriend, most especially at idle and up to about 2.5-3k rpm. In effect this clone should be a race part not a street part.
im converting the PFL engine in my 7/22/03 aka 04 model PFL parts car to FL mount to use it in my sons 06 MCS next weekend, and I noticed his FL shell has no provision for PFL mounts… but my super early 05 MCS actually does have both and has the threaded inserts to use both from factory.
Since I happen to have a new body side mount for PFL, and the PFL mounts on parts car she’ll and engine I know are otherwise excellent condition and vibration free, I’m strongly considering converting to use the PFL mounts from my 04 parts car.
to me it seems like it’s a better design to separate the vertical absorbing from the fore aft holding, (and you almost never read about PFL mounts failing compared to FL where it is common) though I’m sure the simpler design FL was more cost and time efficient on the line.
any thoughts or has anyone ever done this themselves?

I have pre-facelift 03 so I can't comment on the conversion, but just fyi, my motor mounts failed at about 75-80k miles and the excess engine motion caused my pre-cat to break at the weld. So I think the pre-facelift mounts are probably better, but do still wear out. They fail by the rubber cracking leading to excess forward/backward engine motion.
