R50/53 Smart Car vs. Mini Cooper
Has anyone seen the Smart Car? It could be the next Mini Cooper in the USA. I would get one, how about you? Estimated price is around 14K. They are very popular in Europe. Opinions anyone?

I would buy it if they keep it under 10K. 14? No way.

Five top reasons not to get a SMART? car
5. No supercharger.
4. It is not made by BMW.
3. SMART spelled backwards is TRAMS. Say no more.
2. At my age I don't need any help to look foolish.
1. I makes the AZTEX look knock down dead pretty.
Motor on, but in a MCS.
5. No supercharger.

I sylvester Stallone had driven a golf cart in that horrible Judge Dredd movie, it would have been one if these!
Here is the Land Rover Taxi from that movie:

I have seen them in Europe. Interesting looking cars, but nothing truly appealing about them. They were designed mainly for the congested cities in Europe were traffic jams and scarce street parking is a common daily occurrence.
While in Switzerland last year, I saw a Smart "Targa" model with removable roof panel and it was quite a looker. Still it is a tall 2 seater that has a strong resemblance to a Golf cart.
Here in Miami I have seen a black Smart been driven in the near proximity of a Mercedes Benz dealership. I have also seen in numerous ocassions a white Mercedes Benz A140 (A-class not sold in the US) with Swiss plates. Someone brought it over from Europe and the car is a very small, minivanish, tall 5 door hatchback, if you have never seen one. Also very popular in Europe but quality in the A-class has been dismal (Like most Merdedes Benz products of late).

My daughter took a picture of a SMART car dealership in Paris several years ago. The building was multi-story, all glass, and had SMART cars parked on all floors. It looked like a SMART car vending machine.
By the way, Revell sells a SMART car model kit. Comes with interchangeable multicolor doors and fenders. Sorta cute.

Yeah I have a 1/18 scale Maisto Smart 2 seater model. It also comes with interchangeable body color panels (Yellow/Red).
The first time I ever saw a Smart in person was during our first trip to Paris a couple of years ago. Funky looking car, but it is no MINI. The Smart was strictly developed as a city/commuter car.
The Smart was a joint project co-developed between Daimler-Chrysler and Swiss watch maker, Swatch.

I've seen these in Europe. They look ridiculous and are even somewhat of a joke in Europe. I've heard from friends there that the favorite method for stealing them is four people lift them onto a flatbed truck and drive away.
No thanks.

They're called golf-carts.
