R50/53 screw-on oil filter conversion
hi,
has anyone installed the screw-on oil filter conversion from moss motors yet? does this void the warranty?
also, any idea WHY mini did this, it seems somewhat antiquated? last time i've seen this is on my '59 volvo 544... they are very messy to change.
best,

Is it one of those drop in oil filter canisters like I had on my old 1983 mercedes? I really liked those a lot actually? I did not realize that the MINI used something other than screw on.
I actually like to drain my oil in the evening and then plug the pan and fill back up in the morning. That way every last drop that gravity can pull downward gets drained.
If you do it this way, the filter will likely not be too much of a sticky mess when you pull it up and out.
Notice: Since I have not actually taken delivery of my car yet, I am only talking from my experience with other non-MINI vehicles which may or may not be applicable here.

Don't know if it viod the warrenty or not...I do ALL my work on ALL my car..but it is sure nice that they do my oil changes and I don't have to worry about it...
And why did theyt do it?? The oldest ones had it like that...like the old A-series motors in Morris minors, Sprites and MG midgets....nostalgia??

i'm with 2minis. probably to make people come in.
also, they recommend the FIRST oil change at 10,000 miles. synthetic or no this seems insane. in every other engine i've rebuilt i always change the oil after the first 1,000 miles. i know quality has gotten better in engine building and tolerences are tighter but there is always some "wear-in" on a new motors in my expereince, hence the break-in period. this means little bits of metal (tiny yes) will be floating around and hopefully getting caught in the filter. if nothing else the filter should be changed to increase flow and to get those nasty little bits out of the clean new engine.
i'm going to change our oil after about 2,000 miles. no sense taking chances -- oil is cheap compared to engines
