Door Handle questions ('05 MCS)

hi everyone - i did a search for this, but couldn't find what i was looking for (wasn't exactly sure on kewords to use)

anyways, i have an 05 MCS, and while i was waiting for it to show up i was at the MINI owner's lounge reading up about the MINI and its top 10 idiosyncracies. And i read about the door pull - 2 to open the door. on MINI's site about it,
https://ol.miniusa.com/oe/miniidios.asp?relID=1043713# (#1)
it says that it can be reprogrammed and changed to a 1 pull. When i took my MCS in for detailing, I asked them to change the door locks and turn off the daytime headlights. well, they told me they had never heard of that, and that it couldn't be done.

Has anyone had this done, or know if it is possible, or even how to do it?? I'm not sure if the 05 doesnt have this option vs an 04 or whatever, so I was just trying to get some more info on this.

thanks for any/all help

The dealer changed mine to one pull. They know how to do...maybe they just dont want to take the time to do it for you...but they know how to do it.

I believe that the Owner's Manual makes reference to the Two-Pull being a re-programmable option. I'd show this to the dealer.

that's what i thought. my service is done by BWM technicians (not sure if guys are the same as me) in my area. (MINI of Towson), so i think they just didn't want to fool with it.

do you/anyone else know where/how to change it?? if I had a little bit more info about it, I could "tell them what to do". like is it an electronic thing in the computer system, or is it clip or something mechanical that changes it.

thanks for the help

i just downloaded the owners manual from the Lounge, and it makes it seem like they can disable the auto lock feature (when you get up to XX speed)

bigpmj: does yours auto lock anymore? or has it been bypassed to allow the 1 pull??

It is refered to as the auto lock option not a 1 or 2 door handle pull.

The reason you have to pull twice is one to unlock the door and second to open. They can dissable the speed locks thus allowing only one pull to open the door.

If you manually lock the door from the inside or rest your arm on the door locking it in the process youwill still have to pull the handle twice to get out.

Actually, you can have auto locking and one pull to open, but not until the car is shut down. When you shut the car down, the auto locking then auto unlocks... However, if you want to open the car before the car is shut down, you'll still have to pull twice.

I'm just glad the 2005 has the new LEDs, which should make it easier for unfamiliar passengers to find the handle to pull.

thanks Chris. I have noticed the way it works already, and figured that's how it was "thinking" for it to operate. thanks for the info.

Minae: is that something that has to be changed to have both features?? I almost always am getting out of the car after its shut off, do you know how this is done?

thanks again for all the help. I now have info/backup to defend my case to my dealer to get this feature changed

Auto locking at speed is one programmable feature.
Auto unlocking at shut-down is another programmable feature.
I don't know if you can have auto unlock without auto locking. (IOW, I don't know if they're interdependent.)
AFAIK, the double pull to unlock a locked door is not programmable. If somone finds out otherwise, I'd be interested to know about it.

Good luck

auto-unlocking is a separate memory option that is not published. If you want to enable one-pull to open your door, have your dealer make your doors auto-unlock.

It's been a while since I had mine programmed, but I think BRGFan is correct in that they are separate programming options. Like I said, it's hard to remember, but it seems like I had to have a second visit to the dealer to have the auto-unlock feature added...

I'd be surprised if it's possible to program so that when you pull the handle while the door is locked, it both unlocks and opens with that single pull. I think it is the case that when you have to pull the handle twice (while the car is on and the door is locked in my case), the first pull mechanically unlocks the door (there is no servo click sound, just a smooth mechanical unlocking action) while the second pull opens the door.

Good luck!

that's what my Moroting Advisor told me - along those lines. that when you shut the car off, and pull the key out, that would be the auto unlock, and i could do a one-pull. but then the BMW/Service side said the technicial said there was no way to do that.

can the auto unlocking be explained a little more??

I was told that the auto-locking could be disabled, but the dealership required both ignition keys in order to do it - something to consider if you live a few hours away from the garage.

I was going to have it done the last time I was in for service, but they forgot to do it, and I forgot to check...

I have a 04 MCS. It came from the Factory / Vehicle Processing Center with auto-locking enabled and auto-unlocking disabled. My car auto-locks at 5mph.

I learned from others on this forum that there is a separate option - auto-unlocking, that is not documented anywhere. I asked for it to be programmed, and my dealership programmed it without a problem. It works exactly as others described - when I turn the key from position 1 to position 0, the car unlocks. I even played with it a bit - the unlocking occurs about halfway between 1 and 0.

The reason you needed to pull twice is because your car was locked. The first pull unlocks it (BMWs work exactly the same way), and the second pull opens the door. Once your dealer programs in auto-unlocking, you won't need to pull your door handle twice when you want to get out.

If the technician doesn't know how to program auto-unlocking, that should give you an indication of their competence level.

thank you VERY much for this information. So my Motoring Advisor was correct, and my Service rep was now - not suprised actually.

So when I go to talk to the service guys again, I should just say that I want auto-unlocking activated. And if they tell me again that they can't do it, what can i say in rebuttle?? or i guess i will just have to take it to another MINI dealer (not sure where that is in MD). but this option is in the computer system, and just needs to be programed??

thanks for all the help, you all have been SUPER helpful

Schwang,
Your MA is right, and your Service Dept is lookin' lame. More and more I'm realizing how very fortunate I am - as far as MA's go, I think I lucked out.

Mine actually programmed those "convenience options" himself, on D(elivery) Day, right before my eyes, right after a nice thorough walk-thru.

I guess the protocol may be different at different dealerships, as far as MA's even setting foot in the service area. Can't have sales guys embarrassing the highly trained technicians, now can we .

On my '05, the locks will lock at 10mph, and unlock when I shut off the car (maybe not til I remove the key, I don't remember). 1-pull to open. I like it like that.
Tatt

edit: as far as rebuttal, just have them call my (technically gifted) MA
