I did not open the cap when I did it the 3 or 4 times I tried. Was too worried about atmospheric moisture...but I would think any floating up bubbles would just get trapped in the reservoir...the rubber bladder cap can deal with some volumetric expansion. You could open the cap if you want to let excess air out I guess.
