So I did the Porsche Boxter calipers upgrade in my Mini, and I am running them with stock wheels plus 15mm spacers. I would like to get rid of the spacers, so I would need some help figuring out some stuff:
Stock wheels are 17x7 et48, correct? Then, using the webpage willitfit.com, I see that to attain the same set up I can go with 17x7.5 et40. It says that the outer rim will poke out 14.4mm more than before. Then I should be good right?
Anyone using here Boxter brakes too? Any tips on what wheels/setup will clear big brakes? I would appreciate some feedback from you guys, and see what are you running.
Spoke design is a little bit more important than offset for clearing calipers. A good example of this is the R56 GP2. The front brake calipers on that car are HUGE, but that car comes with 17x7.5 +45 wheels, which are only +3mm different from the regular wheels at 17x7 +48. However, to run the regular 17x7 wheels, you need to run 15mm spacers! It's all in the spoke design. It might take a little trial and error to find aftermarket wheels that will fit without spacers. But, if you know the wheels will fit with the 15mm spacers, I say just run the spacers.
Agreed with Nik on spoke design (curvature shape) being key to fitment with oversized brake calipers. My combo isn't Boxster but instead AP Racing with Team Dynamics 7x17 ET45 (both installed early 2006) which clear without interference and no spacers. My R53 came with the OEM S-lites (factory tires date coded 2005 still with mold **** ) plus another unmounted set of S-Lites which I'd have kept but no point since wouldn't work with those brakes thus sold subsequently. Unsure how AP Racing calipers compare dimensionally to Porsche, however I suspect they're as big or bigger than BMW spec'd for any MINI application (could be wrong on that). If of interest, @ECS Tuning shows they expect to have Team Dynamics Wheels back in stock Feb 2023...
