Fuel Gauge Freaky Malfunction

Hi Folks,
Had a bizarre, albeit one time, malfunction with my fuel gauge. First off I own an 05 S with 145K babied, tickle it's butt with a feather miles on it. I never let anything go on it and I'm constantly watching and listening for the slightest sound or noise/symptom so I can repair and maintain this car and make it last forever. Yesterday I was coming back to my home and saw that my gauge was showing that the tank was empty and the red light that signals I only have 2 gallons left was on. I freaked because I had just filled the tank the day before and only driven 3 miles back home after filling the tank so I knew it was not empty. I drove the 2 miles back to my house and got it in the garage and shut the car off. I waited a few minutes, started the car and the gauge showed a full tank. I have driven the car today and made several stop and go errands and it is working fine. I have a 7 hour trip planned for next week so I'm a bit worried this could portend a possible problem.
Has anyone else had this out of left field, one time problem before or could possibly offer me their opinion on this possible aberration?
Thanks in advance!!

Yep, my '03 R53 had this problem. Hard to reproduce too, so I waited until it showed empty first thing in the morning and drove straight to the dealer to get the sensor replaced under warranty.

I wouldn't worry about driving with a defective sensor. I did for a few months with no issues.
