R50/53 Cam sensor swap
Cam sensor swap
Cam sensor died on me recently, have a new one in hand as well as the 17% pulley, new tensioner and belt. Does it make sense to swap it all at the same time? My original goal was to get more miles under my belt with it as is before any changes. Looking at the belt, it looked like it had some cracks which had me limit its use to local drives only. I did not get to give it a good inspection but think now might be the time with the upper motor mount bracket needing to come off.
On the shelf are:
new lower engine mount with insert ($35 total for both)
17% pulley
drive belt tensioner & belt
DEI insulating tape for the rail.
Why I want to wait:
Once that is done then I want to look into a DIY CAI setup I have ideas for. None of what i have seen gets me what I'm after so it will have to be custom. Looking to build the MINI to suit my needs and not
build a track car or weekend only car.
I dont know what I dont know until I walk the path... and, after writing this up, the question is answered, yes, wait on the other part installs provided the current belt is not at risk of snapping.

Why I want to wait:
- baseline timing values under a heat soaked condition, record IATs, CTs, MAP on a controlled hiway run (aka CC) and a gear pull (TBD) to about 6k rpms
- insulate fuel rail along with any exposed metal lines feeding it and repeat #1 for comparison (expect little change)
- install 17% pulley and repeat #1 for comparison
- remove TMIC, clean & correct any fin damage and repeat #1 (expect little change)
- create a top cover for TMIC in an attempt to improve performance, assuming IATs are above ambient... wont know until data is collected.
