Water pump or Thermostat

I have a 2006 R53 with about 72k miles. Last Fall before putting the car away it developed a coolant leak and I also noticed that when the heat was on warm air became cool air. We tried to pinpoint the problem but never actually saw the source. I did not witness any overheating which from what i have heard are signs of a water pump problem. Now I have read that the thermostat and it's housing can occasionally fail. I was convinced it was the water pump but now I don't know. Any ideas?
Also since I bought the car in 2016 I have noticed when I accelerate harder there is a certain smell which I assume has something to do with the supercharger. Any ideas on this? is it normal?
Thanks in advance for your time.
