I'm looking to buying R53 2004 mini cooper s with 119k miles on it. the price negotiated at $2700.00. I just checked the carfax record and it shows that branded title : not actual mileage..
but the thing is the owner owns clean title in CA. I'm little confused with that.. I asked about what happen and he says "when i first registered it at the dmv they never asked me of the mileage and they just put not actual mileage".. any advise?
In Indiana (where I am), that is the case when you title a vehicle as well.....if you walk in the dmv with the mileage left blank, that’s what they will print on the new title. If it concerns you, maybe call up the dmv and tell them the situation.....not sure how it works in Cali, but it may be a matter of them having to do a quick inspection to see mileage.....or if you simply fill in the mileage on the title when you put it in your name, it may correct it when the new title is made. You’ll just have to ask.
if it was me, I wouldn’t be bothered much by it honestly. you are buying a 15 year old car with 120k miles on it here. Even with good records, a lot could be wrong with it at this point potentially. The carfax has recorded the mileage pretty consistently through the inspections you apparently have to have there, so it seems pretty apparent to me that the mileage on the odometer is likely correct and the owners story is likely true. Just do a good job of inspecting (like you should anyway) and look for anything out of the ordinary.
When I registered a car in CO with the mileage blank the would not on the title that the mileage is not actual. When I registered in NY and the car had more than 100k on it, they would also note that.
