Are you talking about the dangerous and childish stoplight street racing that I see the teenagers doing on Friday nights up and down the strip, or real racing that is done by serious and safe enthusiasts on closed road tracks and drag strips?
I have grown out of stoplight drag racing, as I have realized that there is no reason to risk my license or life to prove to an idiot how fast my car is.
When directly challenged though, I offer for them to meet me at the local road track on the next Wednesday afternoon when I am usually out practicing.
So far, nobody has shown up to meet me.
But when I am at the track (in my VW GTI), I am usually running with cars like the Miatas, BMW's, Audi's, VW's, Honda S-2000, as well as the really fast bikes. It's a very twisty track and I am just a novice, but I can usually hang with most cars on the track that are not being driven by excellent drivers. But those bikes, those things are insanely fast. Cars like Mustangs, Firebirds, and Camaros that would kill me in a drag race end up humiliated by my little economy hatchback. . . .
Now I will take my self-righteous hat off for a minute and admit that last week, I was challenged by a Dodge R/T pickup late at night on an abandoned 4 lane highway through farm country with stoplights interspersed every 3 or 4 miles. My V-1 was on the windshield and I was in a silly mood that got the best of my typical sane and logical self. . . .
I knew that there were some trucks out there that were really super fast and that the Dodge R/T has a reputation, but I really had no idea what to expect. He was aggressively challenging me at the light after I had passed him at a pretty good clip a few miles earlier.
I decided to launch slowly, while being ready to give him hell in second gear if it looked like he was going to end up making a fool out of himself. He took about a car length as I eased it halfway through first gear and then I mashed it and basically took off in an explosion of chipped 1.8 turbo madness that I am sure blew his mind.
At the next stoplight a couple miles ahead, he pulled up behind me rather than give it another try. Best part was that his wife/girlfriend was in there and there is nothing worse to an egotistical guy like him than being humilitated in front of his woman.
Sorry it is not a MINI story, as I am still in the GTI for another 2 weeks, but I can say that my MCS will not be as "fast" as my MINI, but it's lap times will be much faster!
