AWD mini

i hope this isn't a repost
http://www.motoringfile.com/2004/10/...eel_drive_mini i just hope this comes true

The power of the all-wheel drive MINI is not divided evenly over all wheels. Most of the power is sent initially to the rear wheels. However once the system senses a loss of traction, the power is distrubted more evenly to the front wheels . On the test track the all-wheel drive MINI appeared 10 per cent faster than the standard front wheel drive car.

When we can expect an all-wheel drive MINI in showrooms is yet unclear. BMW development leader Burkhard Goschel has ridden already in the prototype and, according to Getrag, was "impressed".

First, Welcome to NAM.

I went ahead an merged your thread into the existing thread. We actually have had a pretty healthy discussion of this, but I can definitely appreciate the excitement behind your post.

Psst yeah you know all this jazz about weight is simply talk because it won't matter, personally I think the mini should just go into the class with the pumas and such and dominate, either way if they did make a bigger mini which they might, would be a silly plan... but as fast as keeping up with wrx and evo blash blah blah, not a hard task there is a cap on wrc first of all all the cars are running about the same power all of em are close the same weights so on so on. at the market lvl also a big so what. the STI 300 hp EVO 270.. still faster is some spots.. funny how that works and it's not so much lighter if at all, is bmw wanted to I'm sure they could build it to run with them or beat em, but then they would fire back... or not even care... it's irrelivant aswell when it comes down to tuning seeing as my classic cooper currently puts it to those cars anyway... it's all about how deep your pockets are man I've seen vans beat supercars at the drag and I say a classic cooper freelancer place with a better time than the Pegoet 206 at wrc nigeria a few years back. In the end we are just ants watching this play unfold and when it folds we'll have to move on. Personally I don't like the mini cuz it's small I like it cuz it's fun... does being small make it fun? probably will making it bigger make it less fun? GTO is fun at nearly 4000lbs... evos are fun and handle as well if not better depending on a few elements... my motorcycle is fun... evolution sucks sometime and I'll be sad when the mini dies and is reborn yet again... but maybe all of us can learn to love it againn (like I had to). Oh ps I've run rally (not wrc obvously) with my mini and I think that length rule is stupid I can guess why they did it but boo to them I say boo to them. my mini was a little beast against the big cars :( but as I said before run it with the puma

Why is everyone saying it has to be bigger?

The test mules aren't. Also, I live in a place where some of the turns are always damp, and AWD would be really cool! I'd buy one, and mod till the power to weight came back. Think of it with a SMG!!!!!

I chimed-in on this thread some time ago, but I think the references about increased size are not so much due to the addition on AWD, but that if it were to come to fruition, it would be probably be in the '07 or later editions. There have been rumors that the turbo'd MINIs beginning that production year are to be bigger...

Weight to hp can certainly be made-up for, especially with a turbo. If however it does become larger and heavier, many of the MINI's "fun" attributes that make it so special in slalom-like movements will be compromised. Time will tell on this one...

EXACTLY!!

You hit the nail on the head there, that's the entire story. I'll keep the MINI as a FWD car, thank you. If I want a heavy, AWD beast I'll buy an EVO

Why don't you go measure the dimensions of the ORIGINAL Mini, and weigh it. Think if you hadn't had the new Mini, and you read about the size and weight, it would read JUST LIKE THIS THREAD!!!!!!

Makes you think.....

As for me, my uncle had a mini when I was growing-up. I knew/know it's dimensions & weight, and with that, I almost did not get today's MINI...

I think many of us feel that it's acceptable, but adding still more... At some point it becomes hard to even say we are part of such a legacy at 3,000+ pounds, and losing the transverse mount FWD set-up. And it wouldn't be to accentuate traditional Mini performance charcteristics; but to pursue something different in the way of performance.

AWD turbo rockets are out there already. I hope MINI tries to stay true to the heritage no matter what they decide...
