2005 Gen 1 Cooper S noisy steering, any ideas what it is?

Hi All,

My Sister came over yesterday and said her steering was making a noise. So I went out had a listen and when you rock the steering back and forth you get the noise in the video. Any ideas what it could be?

Many thanks

Someone put the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car?

Check this thread out from another forum: http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-gen...ng-column.html

It might be the same problem with an easy fix. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a helpful video like yours, but it does have a pic. Also, if you do need to replace the steering shaft, the only new ones available in the world are for right hand drive MINI's so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. Us left hand drive owners have to modify them using the instructions from MINI.

I've yet to hear a steering spindle make that much noise (not to say it isn't a spindle). It sounds like a broken tooth/teeth in the steering rack. I've seen it before on one other car.

If you want to rule out the steering spindle you could disconnect it from the steering column inside the car, jack the car up and manually steer the tires back and forth by pushing on the tire to see if the noise persists. If so then chances are that it's going to need a steering rack.
