R53 engine

Was the 03 cooper S engine found in any other car in the wild? (Even just the block) Or was it specifically designed for this car? I assume the latter, but figured I'd ask. For all i know it may be a bug engine or a z3 engine that bmw repurposed. ... z3 engine mini... interesting thought lol. There is almost definitely something that is cheaper and easier to upgrade for high horse than the mini motor that fits in with minimal fabrication

Pretty much the MINI only...

The factory was subsequently crated up and sold, and moved to China when the BMW/Chrysler ended after Dalmher bought them....and the TRI-TEC mini motor lived on...in the more basic versions...
In 1997, Chrysler Corporation and Rover Group (then a subsidiary of BMW) formed a joint venture called Tritec Motors to design a new small straight-4 engine. The new company built a factory in Campo Largo of Curitiba, Brazil specifically to manufacture the new engine. The Tritec name stands for the union of the three countries involved: Germany, the United Kingdom, and Brazil.
When BMW broke up the remains of Rover Group in 2000, BMW kept the stake in Tritec Motors as the engine was in use in the Mini range which BMW had retained. In 2007 BMW sold its 50% stake to DaimlerChrysler and cancelled its contract for the Tritec engine.[1]
1.4(T14a)[edit]
The 1.4 L (1397 cc) version uses a 77 mm (3.0 in) bore and 75 mm (3.0 in) stroke. Like all Tritecs, it is an SOHC 16-valve cast iron engine with an aluminium cylinder head and multipoint sequential electronic fuel injection. Output is rated at 55 kW (75 PS; 74 hp) and 122 N·m (90 lb·ft).
Applications:
Mini One (Portugal, Greece) (until 2008)

1.6(T16b3)[edit]....USED IN THE COOPER
The 1.6 L (1598 cc) version uses the same 77 mm (3.0 in) bore with a longer 85.8 mm (3.38 in) stroke. Output is rated at 66 kW (90 PS; 89 hp) and 140 N·m (100 lb·ft) in the Mini One, and 85 kW (116 PS; 114 hp) and 149 N·m (110 lb·ft) in the Mini Cooper.
Applications:
Chery A11 (Windcloud)
Chery A15 (Flagcloud)
Chrysler Neon (in non-US markets)
Chrysler PT Cruiser (in non-US markets)

Lifan 620
Lifan 520
Mini Hatch and Convertible (until 2008).

1.6 SC(T16b4)[edit] USED IN THE MINI COOPER S
The 1.6 SC uses a Roots-type Eaton M45 supercharger with intercooler. The compression ratio is reduced from 10.5:1 to 8.3:1. Output was initially rated at 120 kW (160 PS; 160 hp) and 210 N·m (150 lb·ft) and increased to 125 kW (170 PS; 168 hp) and 220 N·m (160 lb·ft). The 1.6 SC won the "1.4 L to 1.8 L" category at the International Engine of the Year awards for 2003. It also won Ward's 10 Best Engines award for 2003.
Applications:

Mini Hatch Cooper S

Holy crap... there's THAT much of an hp difference between supercharged and non supervharged models? Over double? How is the Non S even remotely drivable? No offence if you or anyone else happens to own one. I feel that the power mine has is too low and its been tuned with tons of bolt ons. Id rather be at around 200 to the wheels...

Anyway, so what the answer tells me is that there is a cheap chinese knockoff motor out there that i can buy and in theory soup up like crazy and stab in my car instead of buying an oem mini motor and gutting it?

Only problem i have with chinese motors is that the metallurgy just isn't there. Look at their lifan motorcycles / scooters or any tool you buy from harbor freight (like a 12mm wrench that wuickly becomes a 13 with any tq) and it will make sense

And btw thx for the info

Do a search. Plenty of Mini's with 200 hp and not that much done. A pulley, tune, and cai gets you there, no need to gut anything.

Now if you want 300 or more get out the credit card out because it's not going to be cheap.

Also you looked at the numbers wrong, 114 for the non s. The 89 was for the mini one so just 46 more hp with the sc

+1
and the NON-S motor is the one that is in production....
THE S, with many mechanical differences...things like forged parts as opposed to sindered metal parts, is the one still being made....

I'm not sure what mine is running but its probably around there. I bought it with all the junk done to it already. 15% pulley, header back 3" exhaust, alta intake and was tuned by detroit tune, and various other random things i lm sure i dont know about. Stock injectors though. I verified this with the number orinted on the injectors. I dont recall the exhaust brand off the top of my head, probably alta. I just remember i googled it and it was much more expensive thanid have ever expected an exhaust to be for a car lol.

I do want to start souping up my car, getting it closer to 265 to 300 but im not really interested in spending 11 grand to do it, when i could just buy a faster car to begin with for much less. Just sold a 500hp camaro for 8500.. granted, it was fast but it didnt handle like the mini. My only gripe about the mini really is that its fwd... if it was awd it would be awesome.. and yeah, ive seen the twinnies... and its definitely a thought...

I believe that the motors were also used in the Euro-spec PT Cruisers. How many Europeans bought PT Cruisers can probably be counted on one hand.

amen to that, also the srt4 motor is very similar, based off the same idea, but the block itself is different to account the larger displacement. they are sister motors tho

I live in Oregon , have an 02 Cooper S getting long in the tooth and interested in getting the motor freshened up, maybe a stage II Cooper kit. Any suggestions as to shops in the PacNW with good reputation? Thanks in advance for any input.
