My girl picked her MINI up last night.

We tooled around and put about 30 miles on it. Whenever we stopped, a really bad smell of hot/burning/melting plastic was everywhere! It really reaked.

I'm chalking it up to some glue or a sticker or tag getting heated up... but I'm not compeltely at ease about it. Who can put me at ease and tell me they had a similar problem... if not, we are heading back soon to pick up my S and we'll have it looked at then.

Also- that freaking Air Bag sticker on the dash... anyone able to remove it easily? We both think peeling it off would be better looking, but are not sure if it will pull off clean or leave a ton of gross glue.

I've had that problem with a few cars... What the common theme seems to be is it's the mufler "wearing in" There is always some oil in there which gets burned, along with the holding brackets... It could also be the V-belt, or even the break pads! In the worst case scenario, it may even be the electrical system heating up because of a short! :???:

I picked up my MINI two days ago and got the same smell. It is the muffler and engine burning off some sort of oil. It shouldn't be a problem. I have about 100 miles now and the smell seems to be gone. Also, the airbag sticker I had just came right off, no residue, no sticky, no nuthin. Good Luck. By the way, you can barely squeeze two car seats in the back. Good thing my kids get along.

Same thing here. It wasn't a terrible burning oil smell, but more like plastic burning smell. It stopped after 100 miles though. It also smelled strange when I turned the climate control on for the first 250 miles- like there was still traces in the system. It's gone now. One thing to check- make sure they removed the clear protective plastic sheet over "MINI" on the engine. They didn't on mine and I noticed it all melty when I showed the engine compartment to friends and had to peel it off. Be sure and take that sucker off right away.
