My sons 05 Mini Cooper S has dry rot cracks in the area circled on the snorkel. Obviously air is able to pass through these cracks. Will it cause the CEL to come on?

 

It will not. As this just connects the intake to the air filter. But if the cracks are all the way through it will start sucking dirt and grime into the engine. You could patch it up with some friction tape, replace it, or get a silicone version.

 

that hose leaking won't cause a check engine light, but will allow unfiltered air into the engine.
The pic there shows the AT trans version due to the two small hoses coming off it, the manual version only has one hose. You can get the manual version in the silcone, but not the AT ones.
