'03 S Sunroof Problems
 

So I'm having an issue getting my sunroof open...

It's making a lot of grinding noises and it looks like only one side is going up fully when you press the switch in to pop it up for a crack.

When you press it backwards to open it, it starts sliding and pretty much warps the glass as one side goes backward and the other barely moves. Then it gives up so the motor/glass isn't broken. I tried giving it a "little help". But, I stopped after I feared I'd break the glass.

Obviously, it needs lubricated. So, I searched the forums for the correct lubricant and unfortunately I have no way of getting it on the tracks! So, as a kind of last resort, I started spraying everything down with WD40. I still can't get it to move any farther.

I noticed some Torx screws that keep the glass mounted to the car. I tried to get at them but there's no way to get a tool in the side that's not fully coming up.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Have you looked at the tracks to make sure it's not off a bit on one side? There's a cassette and cable. The "cassette" is a complete assembly, the "cable" is what drives the mechanism. Check those as well.

I can't even get in there to look at anything... not sure how I'd go about checking that.

Using a swivel & long torx socket and an extension is about your only hope. Unfortunately until you get the glass out of the way you will not be able to see what is wrong. Have you tried to "help it" , aka, place pressure on the bottom of it as it tries to open...then lube it.
I might suggest lubing it, and if it works great, fine...but if it is iffy, close it, ysnk the fuse...could become a $$ fix on an older car....

Its needs possible a little help to open. The only other way it to pop out the motor and see if you can help it up , sounds like the motor teeth are grinding on the cables. The motor is located in the overhead near the front and comes out with three screws.

Get some PB blaster and a little red tube on the end of the can spray down the gap between the rail and the seal all the way around. Then give the helper a try , then look at those cables.

I ran into a similar situation with my sunroof, but in my case it was caused by a blockage while closing it, which caused the sunroof to go out of alignment (and even some plastic pieces breaking off).
