Hey guys, I was just wondering how long should OEM CV shafts go before they need to be replace. I am working on doing the lower control arm bushing, and replacing the struts with FSD's right now and was just curious if I should do the CV shafts while I am at it. The car is a 06 with 56,000 miles on it and the black coating on the shaft is splitting and cracking off but the boots look to be in decent shape from what I've seen. Also if they should be done, what is a good brand, retailer to get them from that last? Thanks

 

If you do replace the drive shafts, get OEM new or OEM remanufactured. Most of the aftermarkets are crap, from what I've read on here.

I replaced my passenger side shaft shortly after I bought my car at 120k as the boot had split a while before, and the driver's side when I broke the bearing while trying to change the boot after it split doing other work.

You don't really save much time in changing them now while you have that stuff apart, so you'd be ok to wait until it's needed unless you don't want to wait for grease to get everywhere. I will say that the passenger side is much harder to do the actual CV boot replacement on - it's much easier just to replace the shaft.

 

Most of the cheap ones yes. But the DriveShaft Shop basic shafts are as good or better than OEM and cheaper. I get them on eBay. Cheapest place available and they come quickly and are authentic.

I'm going on 130,000 miles on the factory OEM CV shafts. The only problem I've had with them was a cracked boot on one...but after I replaced the boot, and changed the grease ....it was good to go.

Theoretically......as long as the grease stays in them, and the boot doesn't' break and let a bunch of contaminants in.....they should last pretty much forever.
