Can't see the picture...
But black goo I'd usually the hydrolic engine damper...about a $100 part...
It is just a rubber ball in a can with a bolt sticking out...they fail every 40,000 miles...the rubber fatigues, and tears...no big deal...

regarding rental cars

Each state may be different, but here in CA when the other guy is at fault their insurance company issues you a check made out in your name to cover travel expenses. It's up to you to decide how you spend it.

My poor 06 Checkmate has been hit 4 times, twice my wife and I just shared a car and used the check for something other than a rental car.

Yeah here in Kansas we aren't so lucky I don't think. If that was the case I would ride my bike to school and pocket the cash haha we'll see tmrw when they call me I guess. I'll keep you all updated!

It's up to the insurance company how they want to handle it. I've been given a rental.

They already told me a rental will come my way soon, they never said anything about a check for it. I think that's a Cali thing, they just said it's my right to a rental.

Having had a major insurance claim last year, the only advice I can offer is to be the squeaky wheel. Don't be afraid to pester and then pester some more. If you don't aggressively self-advocate, you'll be shuffled to the bottom of the deck.

When My car was hit and totaled. USAA gave me 1 week rental. This was to buy a new car or get mine back on the road. I used the rental car to collect the parts I needed from the local wrecking yards. Cosmetic parts I pought from here or ebay or ecs tuning, or craigslist. I had my car running, and safe (aligned) new airbags within that time. Since I am repairing myself. Im on my own when the car goes into paint. You don't need a rental until you go into the body shop. They should be able to fix your car in a week.

When my car goes into paint I don't get a rental because I bought it back as is. So I am waiting until it is warm. Ill have to use my 1942 jeep as a daily and there is no heater, radio or doors in that. and it only goes 45 mph.

You really should file claim thru USAA. They will take care of you and go after the other insurance for the value they give your car and for repairs.

Steffen, I am located in Kansas - as well - and own an R53 that was ALSO totaled due to a stupid *ss driver (totally different & WORSE accident situation). Please PM me and I will call you to give you some advice on how I handled my insurance claim with USAA. If the car is totaled you should KEEP the salvage (they will deduct it from your total loss settlement) and you can simply fix the car from the $ left over and you'll have a PAID FOR Mini that'll be fixed and back together again in = No Time!

I will await your PM if you'd want to discuss via phone....

...another USAA story...

See photos in my gallery titled "Headbutt"...

USAA sorted out my repair and when the bill went over the claim amount, they adjudicated with the repair shop and paid the difference.

Motor on!

I will PM you now but I will let you know that I am not going through USAA right now I am going there the other persons INS of Farmers Bureau for the simple fact that they provided a rental and USAA couldn't because I don't have a rental policy.

Did you go to Baron MINI Collision to get yours looked at and serviced? I currently am not to sure if it is going to be totaled or not but if it is I am going to buy it back for sure. Fortunately my mini is already paid for so I will be pocketing some of the money or putting rims, tires, and brakes on the car if that is the case.

Also matthewz check your PM

Update

I was called by the "other" insurance company confirming it was NOT my fault and they were at fault..thanks for the obvious news haha.

They asked me what shop I wanted to have it inspected and priced out at and I said the MINI/BMW collision shop they weren't happy with this but they agreed to set up the appoitment for Monday to get it appraised and see where I am at as far as repair vs. total. And they are hooking me up with a rental starting tmrw. I am going to miss my car though, god knows what shitty rental I will be driving. I want my baby back already haha

Another option, assuming the car still runs and they deem it a total loss. See what you can get in terms of cash + keeping the car, keep the car in the condition it is in as a beater/part donor, and pick up another non-salvage mini with the settlement cash that is worth putting parts into in the future. Hell, could even find a cheap fixer-upper non-salvage mini you can swap anything needing work into it from your old one to have a nice one in the end... Then when your done with it recycle/craigslist what remains of the salvaged "car".

Sadly, laws change quite often. I live in CA as well, had an accident 3 months ago in my Jetta (resulting in total loss, and purchasing my mini) and they were 100% fault.
No travel expenses check, no bodily injury check, not even a settlement for emotional distress (we were hit pulling in to my fiance's parents driveway to announce our engagement). none of that stuff gets cut anymore unless you plan to take court action. Apparently it's all based on what you need when you need it, so as not to "profit" from accidents anymore. Injuries = reimbursed based on receipts if you walk away from the accident, transportation is paid directly to rental companies.. pretty crappy the way they have it setup these days. And to top it all off it took over a week before we saw a rental since the police report took FOREVER to turn up a face page. By the time the insurance finally got around to cutting me a check for the car, I was getting auction notices from the lot they had it towed to.

My mini needs a new bumper but he is paying. ;D hope you get it sortied. Best of luck from me and gorge.

Looks like a possible total I will know exactly 100% tmrw. But if it is, has anyone had trouble registering or insuring the SALVAGE? I heard it was harder to get insurance for a car with a Salvage title?

Thru usaa I kept the same policy for mine. They told me if I was in an accident again and I repaired my damage they would deduct $2k from the appraised value of my car. As for registering. Each state is different. I had to get a lights and brakes inspection and clear my airbag code. Then take that into the Dmv where they inspected the vehicle again and then issued me new plates and title. I never took the car off the road as I beat the report from insurance to the dmv. Good luck. Getting thru dmv is the 1st thing you should do so you are legal to drive while you start collecting parts.

Dark road, hill, black ice....utility pole broadside, spun me around 180. Broken rib, knee issues, bumps/bruises. But hell, I'm alive and have Trillian to thank for it. LOL! Gonna really miss that car. Wifey had said to me last month to go ahead and trade her in on a newer one since she had over 135k on her. I looked for a day or so. But in the end I said NOPE! Leave my car alone. Well, now I don't have a choice, so I'm on the prowl for a suitable replacement. Obviously another Mini, since Trillian saved my life.

Sorry to hear that but ...WOW thank you Trillian!! Did you at least get a keep sake from him before he was gone? They ended up repairing mine and not totaling it like they said initially, thank god. But Barnaby has 125,000 miles on him. I dont think thats anything at all for the shape hes in but others im sure will beg to differ.

Low speed bumps are usually pretty minor and mostly cosmetic...
