R50/53 Axle nut?
Axle nut?
Does the axle nut really need to be replaced any time it's removed? Also double checking, I need a 22mm socket for it?
I'm changing my front wheel bearings next weekend. I ordered the bearings but just thought of tools or other parts I may need.
I guess I can see replacing the axle nut every time but wasn't expecting it.
I don't believe I have the 22m socket, Im probably ordering a breaker bar too.
I have torque wrench and basic socket and wrench set. I have the torx from doing brakes... That's Should cover every thing right?

I think it's 32 mm not 22 mm and it's recommended to replace it every time. The nut is staked into the slot on the axle shaft and once you unstake it the nut will be weaker. But if you are planning to remove it after a short time, I'd just reuse it.
I think you'll find that an impact wrench will make removing this much easier, even an electric one.
If yours is like mine, you might find that some of the bolts are really rust-welded in place so the impact wrench will be helpful all along the way. You may end up breaking some of the bolts but most are standard hardware you can get anywhere.
I always put anti-seize compound on these when re-assembling.

I've done the front brakes several times on my 03 R50 and I don't recall any castle nut or tapered washer in that process. Are you possibly trying to take something apart that is not required to do the brakes?
So where can I get axle nuts? Can anybody confirm either on amazon is the right part?

Both are really expensive for a freaking nut
Advanced auto said they can't get them but they usually come with the axle.
told me to go to bmw dealer
Most sites don't list them
Hoping to order with prime for free 2 day shipping and get them in time for next weekend

I just retorqued my drivers side axle nut on my '06 the other day to treat a "click" sound I was getting every time I would take off or stop. I reused the nut. If you are careful un staking the nut when you remove it, I think it's ok to reuse it. It takes a 32mm socket as mentioned above and as I recall the nut torque is 134 lbs.
Btw, I didn't have a socket that size either. If you have a harbor freight store near you, they have that size for sale individually and it was on sale for $4 and some change.
Good luck.

I also just recently purchased from ECS Tuning (advertiser on this site) and was very impressed with their service. The parts came BEFORE I was ready to install them.
I avoid the local Mini dealer at all costs.

My pleasure. I bought a pair of parking brake cables to replace my rusted and sticking ones. I think the package arrived the next day after I ordered which surprised me!
Awesome. Thanks
