R50/53 long drive in modded r53
Don't know about the box yet. But we've been on some 2+hr trips with a double running stroller on top, which doesn't seem to adversely affect mpgs that much (maybe about 5?). I keep a log every time I fill up, and there hasn't been much of a discrepancy.
I'll be checking in the box soon hopefully.
This is the stroller and a Thule bike rack (on Mont Blanc roof rack):

my trip is done for now. im back in texas. but now i want to drive Marie on the highway some more LOL in Tennessee where the roads are curvy and far from flat :D
my 03 Mini feels better then a 99 Porsche on the highway
better then a 05 ford explorer, a 01 civic, and a 04 mustang as well.
i pulled mid 30's mpg doing an average of about 80 mph
----- i find that impressive -----

hey everyone .. I have a 2004 MCS with a 15% reduction on the supercharger pulley.. now I don't have any troubles with the car but I just haven't driven it for an extended period of time before.. this will be a 10 hour trip... is there anything I should be concerned about driving it this kind of distance with a reduced pulley other then stock?
You should be able to drive that thing all over the place without any issues.
Last weekend we drove a 5hr trip up to MOT (Mt Washington) last weekend. The trip wasn't as mpg possitive as hoped. Although it was very hilly/mountains. With the car filled to the roof, windows down, and the double stroller up top (definitely had some drag), averaged 23mpg. 6mpg lower than the usual. For good reason I haven't been able to touch the mpg my 03S used to get (avg 34).
How are you guys getting 36+ mpg going 80 mph???
My 03 S gets maybe 27-29 mpg going that fast. I just did a full tune up and didn't really affect the mileage. I can get around 34-35 mpg if I slow down to 65-68 mph.
hah, yeah I've noticed this. We took ours out through a lot of small towns and got a lot of weird looks. The Mini is normally a "city slicker" car so people in rural areas rarely see them.

gtmotor - is you car an auto or a manual? when is the last time the tranny fluid was changed out?
.
i have a 5 speed manual and i change the fluid my self every other oil change, and i am running royal purple max in my tranny.
.
what mods does your car have?
.
i have 205 tires and not 195s
i have a short shifter and shift kit (does not effect high mpg tho)
i have a megan exhaust kit
i have a very open free flow CAI with some added air opening above the radiator for fresh air to enter.
.
lots of factors can change your fuel mileage from plugs to air flow

6-speed manual, has Redline MTL in it changed by myself a few months ago.
Stock 195s and stock everything else. Has new plugs, air filter, plug wires, etc.
Do you have a base model? I see your user name has R50 in it and you mentioned a 5-speed transmission...

Hills, mountains, cargo, cheap fuel... Everything affects mpg. My average best occurs on back roads doing about 40-50mph. I was doing a 20 min commute daily, averaging 32-34mpg (in my 03 S). Now (with my 06 JCW), I'd average 28 on the same commute.
MY02 MCS is sitting at 255whp. I get just shy of 30mpg at 80mph. I've made 3 trips from FL to Canada with out a single problem.
When I do drive, I only stop for fuel and do the entire 23 hour drive with out stopping for anything other than to fill up. R53 can be extremely reliable even at double factory power lvls.
To date, i've motored 34k miles at 255whp. I'm actually surprised how well its holding up... It does like to chew through factory axels though!

yes i have an R50. its a 2003 with 117,000+ miles
and yes i to have an axle/cv joint issue. the bearings in those cv's go out often. so i have extra bearings in the tire changing kit LOL i need to get all new axles/ cv joints and address the issue correctly but im waiting, im about to move to a different state (from Texas to Tennessee) then ill do a ton of work just because. like rebuild the tranny, for some reason when moving in reverse with the clutch pressed it makes a nasty sound. i think my reverse is bad but the magnet on the drain plug is clean? i figure it out when its stripped down.
