Hatch rust through

Can anyone give pros and cons for MINI of Bedford NH and MINI of Burlington VT? I need to take my 2006 Cooper in to see if the rust on the hatchback can be fixed under warranty. Since both dealerships are equidistant from me, if one is better to deal with when it comes to warranties, I'd rather go there.

Also, anyone else gone through this process? From reading up on this site, it seems to depend on dealer whim if the repair is covered. The rust on my vehicle is so severe the license plate lights shorted out. I took the lens plate off to replace the bulbs and found the entire assembly and the interior rusted.

I have a similar problem on my 05 mcs I was quoted around 350 for the repair, I'd like to have it repaired under a warranty if possible. Keep us posted.

It appears that for a 2006 MINI there is a 12 year rust warranty.

Also 12 year... Change occurred with the 2005 model year....
Car must be inspected at the dealer at regular intervals for the rust warrenty...think it is 1 per year...basicly they look at the car for free...and have the chance to fix minor issues before it us a major issue.....

You still might be covered....
Since it is unknown if the dealer has inspected it, I would drop by, and ask....
You are certainly covered by the dates...hopefully they will cover it...you will never know if you don't ask!

Oh I have that rust too, thanks for the info. The rust I first complained about is on the actual hatch door. Really starting to fret that I may need to say goodbye to Motor. :(

Not sure...
Bedford is new enough I have bought parts there but never had my car worked on there....
One tip...
MINI of Bedford is the sister dealer of MINI of Peabody MA (same ownership group), and I have good luck with them, and they do have a good reputation....
Location wise...MINI of Bedford is at the intersection of 293 and Rt3/Everett turnpike....there is a Target and a Lowe's across the street, and the airport is about a 5 minute drive away if it makes any difference in getting a rental car.

My hatch latch is falling off from perforated rust on my 2005. The tail lights are likely soon going to fall out. Dealer is 300 km round trip and they will not cover it under 12 yr warranty because I didn't have it inspected- I would have had I been confident it wouldn't break down on route to the dealer.

Service records are about 2 inches thick. On my 3rd power steering pump- not covered under recalls, no electrical systems work due to water damage from sunroof that they did replace. I bought a mini lemon. Trade in value is $2500. Looking at switching to VW as they do stand behind their rust warranty- no inspections needed or questions asked.

And yes I joined the forum to find out if others were having similar problems. I love my mini, but cannot possibly recommend keeping one after it is 5 yrs old.

They will cover it. My son bought 2nd hand, they covered his (sent pics away as well), and since I have been having this issue, I have heard of 2 others who VW covered. I am test driving Jettas and Tiguans. It's no cost to the dealer, VW will pay them for the repairs- but they need VW approval in order to get paid.

Sucks I admit....but lemons exist..guess you found one....did you get it inspected before you bought it?!

From: United Kingdom.
I have a 2004 Cooper and had a passenger side door replaced under warranty,
due to the paint bubbling up along the bottom of the door.
I presume this was due to rust under the paintwork.
This work was carried out in March 2010 and I was told by Mini UK that my
vehicle, which was purchased in April 2004, had a TWELVE YEAR anti-corrosion
warranty!
I even have this in writing from Mini themselves.

I bought it in '07 from the dealer - only service records at that time were regular maintenance. I have since found out car had transmission replaced by dealer- not in service records. Car was also smashed in rear- not in service records. The dealer is useless and non responsive to my concerns. If our local Mini market is weak, Mini needs to look at the dealer.

Mini will only cover perforated rust under their useless 12 yr warranty- so when mine was perforated, I wanted them to fix it- They won't because it wasn't inspected. Car wasn't road worthy to drive the 300km's to have it inspected.

I don't understand why it has to be periodically inspected in order to have the rust warranty honored.

I think that is just a way to be able to deny doing the repair work knowing people don't think of having that done. Has anyone been reminded by the dealership about having rust inspection done? Has anyone had their car in for service where the dealer did the rust inspection without being asked just like they check other time/mileage based items any time the car is brought in? I doubt it as other service work bring in money, but a rust check doesn't.

Mini is telling me that the need to have it inspected is in their policy- which I was never given a copy of. I have asked for a copy several times and no one has sent me it. Not Halifax Mini or Mini Canada. I wasn't aware of the 12 yr warranty until the rust started and became perforated. I think I was researching numerous other problems- power steering pumps- I now need my 3rd. Electrical systems gone due to water leaks from a sunroof that they did replace. I bought it in 2007, put 120,000 highway km's on it in 5 yrs. But only about 10,000 km's in the past 2 years because it is continually breaking down. I don't trust it to drive the 300 km's to the dealer to have it fixed. I don't trust it to drive to the corner store!!

Rust in an area that was repaired by a body shop....sounds kinda like it would not be covered...factory did not have control over the quality of the work...do not mean to sound Anything but sorry, but car has a much longer history here than just a dealer say no...
Rust is like cancer...catch it early when it starts... Fast and easy fix...wait...and you loose the car...that is why there is a dealer inspection....

One thought....
Why not just get a new hatch...makes it a minor issue on a body panel...no welding...might double the value of the car and fix the issue....while that rust took several years to get that bad...a new hatch..transfer the parts....good to go!!

Wow, that's a lot of rust, you would never see this in CA.
I agree with Zippy that if there was rear collision damage, MINI is off the hook. The quality of the repair and care taken for rust preventive application is likely the biggest factor in the state of the body work.
As to the rust inspection, I believe it is a section in the warranty and service booklet, the one the dealers do not stamp...
