replacement stereo

I'm considering replacing the stereo - I don't have the HK system and it kinda sounds like crap.

I've done my own installs for over 10 years, so generally I'm pretty comfortable with it. But this is my first Mini (and Euro car for that matter). Is a replacement deck just drop in and go? Or is there anything I have to worry about with the computer programming or wiring harness?

For example, I had a 2002 Trailblazer. Chevy did the stupidest thing; they routed important things like ABS & power steering through the deck harness. So I had to wire in a special bit of kit that allowed for an aftermarket deck and not screw up the ABS.

Thanks!

- Chris

If you have the first generation MINI then its not too bad. I just got the wire adapter plug and it made things simple. Also wired the pac system for steering wheel controls. But that would be up to you! good luck!

You will also need a fascia adaptor and Antenna adaptor, like this kit on eBay

if you order from crutchfield, normally they include evetything you meed for free, along with decent instructions. usually there is a wire harness involved that will need to be connected to the stereo and then plugged into the factory harness.

even if you dont buy ftom crutchfield, i think if you browse their website, it will show you the odds and ends you may need.

and if youre planning on changing the speakers, you may need adapter plates for those. i needed them for mine and ended up ordering them from amazon.

the steering wheel controls involving taking down the steering column amd cutting into some wires, but i did it on mine and it is worth the extra trouble to have those buttons working.

i did my the stereo, steering wherl controls, amd both front door speakers all without breaking anything or doing anything wrong, amd it was only the 3rd car audio install ive ever done. the best tip is to do it when its warm, so your plastics are less brittle, and dont rush it.

I cannot recommend Crutchfield enough.

I just did 2 installs on an 05 and 06. Crutchfield provided the wiring harness adaptor, antenna connection as well as any speaker adaptors when required. They also offer great support.

To add to the OP's question. From my reading isn't there a spare red wire you have to direct connect to the fuse box or a constant 12v source. Im about to order and do one in the my 03 r53

Yes. Most aftermarket radios require a separate power wire for some reason. It needs to run to a switched fuse in the fuse box.
Again, Crutchfield provides detailed instructions as well as the fuse and a little holder thing. I can take a photo of the instructions and post if you like.

Thanks everyone for their input!

I've been looking at Crutchfield and it's definitely the best deal for the money. It sounds like a pretty straight forward install; my main concern was if there was any Chevy-like stupidness that I had to watch for. Since Crutchfield supplies the necessary install bits, it should be relatively easy (knock on wood).
