R50/53 Is fram a ripoff?
Is fram a ripoff?
Or the last 5 service intervals I've been using royal purple with a purolator classic filter. Going to grab it off the shelf I decided to take a peek at my other options. I noticed the fram extra guard was 23.99. There were only a handful of filters that price and most were much bigger than the mini one. So I'm wondering if anyone knows a reason for such a high price? Is it worth it?
And I also saw a few filters that specified for synthetic oils, if I'm running rp, which is full synthetic, do I need a special filter? And finally is there a contained filter, not cartridge type, that works with the mini?

Make sure you have the right filter, don't know about Fram being 23 $. All the filters should be close to the ones below. No spin on filter for these MINIs. All drop in.
No special filter for Royal purple or anything else we carry.
For All Gen 1 MINIs R50 R52 R53 you have this filter. I have changed mine many times with no problems.

We have them in muti pack also.

OR
10 packs.

Check on that drain plug also, if the head has been chewed up ( from a wrong size socket ) on the plug or starts to stick replace it. Takes a 1/2 " box end wrench.

Hope that helps.

Not the greatest filter out there. The high price is likely due to limited production.
I'd take a Mann or a Wix filter any day of a Fram. The Purolator is a fine filter too. Mann, Wix, and Purolator are superior filters to Fram and you get two for one compared to Fram.

No need for a "special" filter for syenthic oil....lol..(IF YOU DID, any mini filter would be ok, since all mini's REQUIRE 100% SYENTHIC OIL)......
A for filter brands....oem/Mann for me....
Biggest issue with some brands is the oring that fits on the oil filter housing cap....many brands have ones that are too thin or thick....leaks result.....always lube the ring with some oil, and check for leaks after a few minutes of running...then check again in a couple miles...
And I would RUN from a parts store wanting almost $25 for a oil filter...that is about 2x the highest prevailing price....dealers are about half that price...USUSLLY less....
ive had no problems with Purolator. and i was just really curious about the fram one. I had heard some really bad reviews for them, not specific to minis, so i was dumbfounded that it was 3x the price of the purolator. and it wasnt some special hiked up price from the shop, the cheapest one i could find online was still around eighteen dollars.
