Keys, keys, keys
I just got a 2002 Mini Cooper S
I need to replace the remote cover, I have the more pear shaped, or egg shaped key. Can any tell me what the little rectangle shaped black piece is located on the back side of the shell?
How or can you, even transfer that piece to a new shell?
How do you remove the roll pin is there a way someone has come up with to pop it out? I have micro drill bits but hoping to get it out without killing it.
I have a key shell I bought off eBay so, (I assume) if I can flip the black rectangle, and pin I will be good. Now, as I am learning with mini's, I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone tells me, ""UH' it don't work like that""
So, before I do anything I figured I work wait till someone could inform me about the key swap.

The Philips chip with the bevelled edge in the left side of the key shown in this photo is the transponder for the immobiliser and is glued in place.
Both the chip and the remote control transmitter for the locks must be transferred to the new key.

Gary-
E-mail me at minikeyhospital at outlook dot com. I can fix your key here at the MINI Key Hospital and my prices are reasonable. I can use a new shell to do the repair (if that's what you got) but a used eBay key does me no good as I have only ever gotten the roll pin out without destroying the key once. Besides, a new shell is shiny and you get to choose between Clamshell and Switchblade. Who doesn't like shiny choices? Some good pictures of your key will help me estimate what the repairs will be.
Dr. Bruce
P.S.- I've never found the EWS/immobilizer chip glued in. Good thing- I'd be afraid of breaking or damaging it trying to get it free of the glue.
