Could be the turbo oil line leaking. I hope he knows to push for an investigation.

Thats a Gen1 car; no turbo, just supercharger. Perhaps a wiring harness fire.

It's a first gen model so I'll assume it's the power steering pump.

Any other ideas?

Oil leak maybe from valve cover dripping down seen that before on my friends car. My valvecover gasket leaking bout work on that this week along with new struts and motor mount. I know a couple with mini and can afford the upkeep. They are fun cars but u gotta maintaine them.

Last summer my R53 began to smoke as I ws driving with my daughter in rush hour traffic. Lucky I was still on a road in city. I pulled over on the first road and ran up to a house and banged on the door. This old woman answered. I was like, "MY CARS ON FIRE I NEED YOUR WATER HOSE!". She was like there it is.... I poped the hood and doused the fire out before it could get started.
Guess what it was....... A """f%$#king!!!"" marmet started to mate a fricken nest around my exhaust header. Not only that he ate a bunch of the insulation lining of my hood. Bastard!

Quite a few years ago, I had a VW Rabbit. I was adding some oil and laid the filler cap on top of the engine. When I was done I forgot to reinstall the filler cap. After about 10 miles of driving I noticed some smoke, pulled over, and popped the hood. Oil had sprayed on the exhaust manifold and was smoking. As soon as I opened the hood, it burst into flames. I had a blanket in the car and used it to smother the flames. No damage other than a melted windshield washer hose and a mess to clean up with the oil all over the engine compartment.
