R50/53 MINI involved in fatal accident
Detials on this are still a bit sketchy. My information comes from the 6:30 and 7:30 AM broadcasts of the WRC-TV 4 morning news, nothing on their website yet.
Apparently last night (Saturday night/Sunday AM) a CR/W MINI with driving lights (that's the car they keep showing) stuck and killed a teenager in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC. Initial reports are that the teen walked into the road without looking. The driver remained on the scene and waited for the authorities. No word right now if the driver will be charged with anything.
If you're not familiar with DC, there is a big push over pedestrian safety in the Maryland suburbs. Both drivers and pedestrians are equally at fault, drivers rarely yield for pedestrians, and pedestrains rarely use crosswalks or even look before crossing. Worse still, many pedestrian accidents are also hit and runs in the DC area, there was a pedestrian involved hit and run in VA last night as well.

This is awful
The pedestrian/traffic "dance" is never ideal, but it seems that in D.C. and the surrounding areas there is no method to the madness. When I'm in other large cities I feel less confused by the traffic/pedestrain habits when compared to the D.C. area. I hope the MINI driver, if not at fault, isn't blamed for the accident, although there of course is some responsbility to be taken in this horrible situation.

I've been going to school in DC for 4 years and so I have been a pedestrian in DC for just as long. Its crazy around here, I've had near misses with cars while I was in the crosswalk many times. The other problem is that many people (me included) don't use crosswalks, sometimes its just not convenient (I know, no excuse). When I'm driving around though I try to be a courteous to pedestrians as I car, cause I know it can be frustrating sometimes.
On campus here at GW there's a big huge crosswalk right in the middle of H street on main area of campus. There's been a couple people hit there and I've been honked at many times for crossing it when its the LAW to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk. I think the main problem is that drivers out here mostly suck, horribly, but thats for another thread
