I suggest you check all you lights, and check to see if they all work.
Then check you temp gauge...and see if you have a outside air temp shown that makes sense. The temp sensor is also in that area.
If they are all fine, then it is possible it is a leftover from a removed part...like fog-lights, etc.

Pretty sure there is lights in the side reflectors, you might want to check that first as the length and position really looks like it could go there.

Mine was exposed too but didn't notice until the socket was gone and the wires frayed and exposed :(

Yes there are side-marker-lights behind those skinny lenses in the black plastic on the side of the fender. 3/4 of mine work. At first I thought they were just reflectors.
