2003 Mini Purchase

I have the oppurtunity to buy a 2003 Mini (for 6K) from a relative whose mother (74 at the time) purchased the car new and used it around town until she lost her license (eyes) in 2009. All I know at this point is it has 32k miles, automatic, was last inspected and started in 2011, has been sitting outside in Pittsburgh, PA weather and the interior and exterior look decent. I currently play in a 77 MGB that was restored in 89 and runs great but I want this Mini for my wife to use everyday.
Could I typically rely on a 10 year old Mini or am I asking for future expensive problems?
Any input will help me greatly, I know nothing about the history of the Mini.

Might want to start a search on the issues with automatic transmissions on first generation MINIs, particularly pre 2005 models, before proceeding. Good luck.

Welcome aboard and good luck. I love hearing that your MINI will stay in the family. Here is something you can read http://www.motoringfile.com/mini-r50r53-buyers-guide/

Since it sat....
And has an auto (CVT) (think $5500-7500 fix)= TWO BIG STRIKES AGAINST it...
But if the price is right...you could chance it...drive it a little and maybe sell it before the CVT implodes...might make a few $$ and have some fun.
Good Luck!!

As hard as it might be I would say that you should pass on the car. I bought an 2003 new and drove it until 2010 without a lick of trouble...however it was a CVT auto (the same as the one you're looking at) and with all the trouble that was being reported with the CVT I was becoming increasingly nervous and decided to trade (for another MINI)..I believe mine had close to 72K when I traded and that was around the time when others had reported the need for a CVT replacement. Incidentally...I have a 1975 MGB also....

Vin

Thank you all vey much. I think I'm going to get the VIN and at least look into the service history. I've been told she had it serviced at a MC dealership through the years and maybe just maybe the CVT was replaced? Probably wishful thinking?
