I just had hopefully a quick question regarding what factory battery I should be using in my 2005 Cooper S. My question is, my original battery was part #61 21 6 920 804, but the new one the dealer gave me is part #61 21 6 591 080. I understand that the original battery was superseded by a replacement, but nowhere do I see that the battery I got was the replacement. In fact I show it being for a BMW Z4 and I come up with another number all together. Is this in fact the correct battery for my car? It doesn't have the vent tube like the original did, but I am reading various things about MINI having done away with that. I'm just wanting to make sure they gave me the correct one!

According to this, none of these are correct. Group 47 is the correct size. Personally, I'd want one with a venttube...but what do I know?

Actually penskeparts.com does list my original battery, but it is NA. I just don't see this other one that the MINI dealer sold me listed anywhere. They were a MINI only dealer, so I really don't think they accidentally gave me a battery for a Z4 or something since they don't sell them. Just curious if anyone else has this battery in their car. I'm at work right now, but I will check to see how it fits when I get home. The dealer is way out of my way, so I really don't want to have to take it back. I do remember reading that MINI did away with the vent tube, but not sure where now. But it basically stated that the new style battery didn't need to be vented. I do agree though, I would rather have the vent tube.

Well I guess it's the right battery even though its not vented. Looking at realoem and penskeparts it shows my original battery being superseded by part #61217591081. Then on my receipt there is a note that the battery they sold me (#61217591080) supersedes the 081 version. So I guess they are just on their 3rd version of this battery. I'm gonna assume then the vent tube is not needed anymore and just go with it.

Well I'm an idiot... the new battery does in fact have a spot for the vent tube, I somehow didn't see it! So all is good and I would say anyone looking for an original MINI battery part #21 6 591 080 is in fact what you want.

What was the dealer cost on this OEM battery?
Thanks, Steve

It was a $172 plus tax. My local Autozone wanted $150 for their Duralast battery that I've read fits real nice, but I figured for $22 more I'd go OEM. Besides I got 9 years out of the original one and I had a 2000 BMW before that, that I sold in '08 that still had the original battery in as well. So I've had really good luck with the factory batteries.
