Fuel tank breather valve - proper operation? (clicking)

Hey Guys,

Noticed that lately my fuel tank breather valve is clicking when the car is running. It doesn't seem to be all the time, but when it does it clicks rapidly and is rather loud. Taps like a valve tap.

I guess my question is - is this normal? I've only owned the car for 8 months and this is the first winter with it.

Its an 02 mcs...

The part i refer to is part # 1: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...77&hg=13&fg=15

I guess it is worth noting that my gas mileage is also horrible - 23 mpg

Are you sure it is coming from that part? You had the hood open at idle and confirmed this was clicking. Have fault codes?

I've had the same issue with my '03 MCS but only for a short period of time
following winter storage. As you state, a loud ticking sound that I could get rid of with some throttle input but would return upon idle.
After 10 min. or so ticking ceases and that would be it until the following
winter storage period.
Didn't cause any negative running or warning lights. I'll see this Spring if
it happens again or gets worse and will then make the decision to replace.
Sorry no definitive answer here! But sometimes it nice to know "YOU ARE NOT ALONE"! Also your diagnosis is correct it is the Fuel breather valve.
