R50/53 Yet another dumb newbie question . . . . .
I got my keys with one black and one silver. And I've switched off using both of them and they don't appear to do anything different. Maybe the all black one is supposed to be used for back up purposes?

I was going to say something here about there being no "dumb" questions...but maybe I'm not so sure about that now.
Those of you who have the "black" key (w/o "wings"
, have you tried to use it to remotely unlock your doors? What? No button to push on the key? Ah ha! Only the "wings" key contains a remote. The other key doesn't. Hence no wings.
And I believe that starting in 2003 (or maybe 2004), the "black" key stopped being supplied. For the $100 price increase between the model years, you now get TWO remote keys.

The one that is all black does indeed have wings and it operates exactly the same as the one with the silver metal wings. It is a back-up key. I believe that MINI's being delivered now have both keys with the silver wings.
It is a good idea to use your back-up from time to time, as I have it from more than one source that the battery within is charged while operating the car.

>>As far as i know the one with plastic wings is the back up (or valet) copy, this one is not able to open the co-pilot door nor the trunk. At leas in my MCS (mexico version) it works that way.

>>Took Feb. '03 delivery of my MC, and both keys have black wings. I don't feel cheated, but you know what they say, "Every crowd has a silver whining..."
I belive only the MCS came with the silver wings - on either one or both keys.

One of my keys plays Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" when I hit the button, and the other one plays the guitar bit from Janis Joplin's "Summertime." Other than that, they both seem to work the same.
back in Aug of '02 when I got my mcs,I got one key with silver wing logo and one key without remote. My wife wanted a key like mine so I inquired of my salesman and was told the extra remote keys were expensive"$75 dollars or so" reluctantly I told him to go ahead and order the extra ,and when I went in a week later to pick it up, The parts guy told me it would be $125! I told him I'd been quoted around 75, he called the salesman in to ask,and the guy totally buckled and lied straight faced that he had quoted me 125.I told him ,no in fact he had not, and that if he had ,we wouldn't be having this conversation, and he got quite surely and told me that's it ,that's the price.I told him I would be glad to pay him the $75 ,but beyond that they could keep it. The service mgr.finally agreed to sell me the key for the agreed upon price and confided to me that the salesman had had to pay the difference out of his commission on the car .What a great way to start out a relationship,eh?And that was the cornerstone for the 6 windshields they wound up replacing, all under warrentee! They must really love to see me coming.

1/04 build date 2/16/04 delivery MCS. One silver wing and one black wing and one flat plastic key. the two winged keys work the same. I believe you need to alternate using them every once in awhile because the batteries are charged while in the ignition.
I took delivery of my 2004 MCS in mid-March, and I got one silver, one black (plus a black plastic key), and the two appear to be identical (in looks and operation, except for the color of the wing). The third one I bought is silver.
Does anyone have any idea how often it should be used? My other two keys will only get used occasionally (on the keyrings of two others in my household, but it's my car...)?

if you have two black wings you have a cooper, if you have a silver and a black winged key you have a cooper S.

Aren't the keys identical except for the silver colored sticker in the shape of wings? I use the black one and I'm saving the silver one. Did not know about the battery so maybe I'll take the silver one out for a spin soon.
I have a 03 MCS that came with one silver wing and one black wing key, both function the same, the thin plastic key is an emergency one to put in you wallet. Just what purpose would a valet key serve on a MINI, the glove box doesn't have a lock and if you can unlock the door you can get into the boot.

The valet key on the MCS is WAY quicker than on the MC......thought everyone knew that.....
Of course the MC one is better looking (neater wings) AND handles better....
