Intermittent trunk latch…Electrical Wiz needed
The trunk latch on my 2005 mcs had been working intermittently for the last few months. I figured this weekend would be the last time I dug my hand under the rear seat to release the trunk. Well after getting everything apart I ran into what I am suspecting was the culprit. The internals of the connector (BMW PN 6 905 977) that connects the wiring harness to the latch had all but disintegrated.

My solution was to pull the connector out and use butt connectors to do the job. Easy fix right? Well, it turns out two of the wires match and the third, the one pictured in my hand, does not have a matching partner.

When I touch the wire pictured in my hand to a ground it cycles the latch. My question is how should the wires be assembled and is a new connector necessary? Thanks for any insight.

youll have to rip apart the other connector. does it only have 2 slots with pins in it (to accept only 2 of those 3 wires) sometimes they will make 2 wires connect internally on connectors, and sometimes not even use a wire.
Is this the connector to the latch itself or the connector to the microswitch on the trunk handle?
Also looking at the first pic it seems 3 wires go into the connector in 3 seperate slots. You can see there are only the 2 outside slots have silver pins. Therefore the middle wire is likely not being used.
Easy check is to use an ohm meter and check resistance. Go through all the possible combinations from that connector, pin slot 1 to wire 1, then wire 2 then 3 then move to pin slot 2 and so on. 9 total combinations. Write down where you have connectivity ans that will tell you what wires are connected and functioning throuh that connector.
Also, check your hatch seal for cracks/cuts. Sit in the back if your mini with the hatch interior panel and latch panel removed. Close the hatch and have a helper spray the rear of the mini. Look for water oenetration. Corrosion on interior connectors almost always is due to woter penetration.
Good luck!
